Mount St. Mary's Outlasts Quinnipiac, 9-8

Katy Delagi moved up to ninth on the program's all-time scoring list, but the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team took a 9-8 loss to Mount St. Mary's in a battle of two unbeaten clubs in conference play this afternoon. After Mount St. Mary's scored its only goal of the second half in the opening minutes after recess to take a 9-4 lead, the Bobcats scored four straight times before the clock unfortunately ran out on them. It was the first loss the Bobcats took at home since April 7, 2006.

Quinnipiac drops to 6-4 overall, 4-1 in NEC play. Mount St. Mary's improves to 4-6 overall, 4-0 in NEC play.

This was the second straight one-goal game the teams played against each other. Quinnipiac defeated Mount St. Mary's, 12-11, in overtime on the road last year and remains the only NEC team to beat the Mountaineers in Emmitsburg, Md. since UMBC did it on Apr. 12, 2002.

The Mount scored the first three goals of the game in the opening 6:08. Rebecca Douglass factored in to all three scores. After netting the first goal un assisted at 28:52, she set up Jenna Duffy and Katelyn Catanese at 26:49 and 23:52.

The Bobcats fought right back with three straight goals of their own to tie the game at 3-3. Tiffany Manzi found the top left corner of the net on a free position shot at 23:17 to open the scoring. Katie Latonick made a pass to Brittany Hauser from behind the net. Hauser, who finished the game with a career-best four caused turnovers, scored the second Bobcat goal at 19:23 on the assist from Katie Latonick. Nicole Fiore followed with a goal on a free postion shot at 17:55.

Mount St. Mary's regained a lead by two goals courtesy of Breana Waraksa and Duffy at 15:50 and 14:03.

Quinnipiac's Katie Latonick cut the Mountaineers' lead in half with a goal on a free position shot at 11:02.

The Mountaineers closed out the half on a three-goal run with scores coming from Katie Falatach, Caitlin Preas and Candice Welke. The teams headed to the recess with the Mountaineers in command, 8-4.

Standing behind the net, Falatach found a cutting Catanese for a goal at 28:12 to give the Mountaineers a 9-4 lead.

However, the Bobcats would never give up and scored four unanswered goals to make it a 9-8 game. Katy Delagi started things up with a score at 26:03 and moved up to ninth on the program's all-time points list.

Meghan Latonick followed with a goal at 18:51 and Delagi scored again at 14:22 to cut the Mount lead to just two goals.

Meghan Latonick then set up Tiffany Manzi for a score to cut the Mountaineer lead to just one goal with 12:58 left to play and forced the visitors to call a timeout.

Quinnipiac appeared to tie the game up at 9-9 just over two minutes later. Fiore took a free position shot that was saved by the Mount's Jane Karger. A Bobcat collected the rebound and flipped the ball past Karger. Unfortunately, Quinnipiac was called for a crease violation and Mount St. Mary's successfully cleared the ball.

Both teams had many more scoring opportunities, including the final minute of play.

Quinnipiac got a free position attempt in the final minute. Unfortunately, the Mount's defense swarmed around Janelle Lopez and Jacqui Ricca caused her sixth turnover of the game. The defender scooped up her eighth ground ball and the club successfully cleared it.

With an open net to shoot on after a Bobcat foul, Casey Paris appeared to have scored to ice the game in the Mountaineers' favor. However, the goal was overturned by the referees for an illegal stick and the Bobcats had just under six seconds to move the ball down the field.
