Newton Leads Colorado College Past Regis University
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Junior attacker Mallory Newton scored a career-high seven goals to the Colorado College women's lacrosse team to an 18-15 victory over Regis University on Thursday night at CC's Washburn Field.
Playing in their final home game, senior attacker Kate Fitzgerald scored four goals and two assists, while senior midfielder Robin Harvey had three markers and set up two others. Just under a minute after the Rangers cut CC's lead to 14-13 with 4:45 remaining, the duo scored 29 seconds apart to give the Tigers some breathing room and Harvey's tally proved to be the game winner.
Harvey sparked a 4-0 run early in the second half that helped the Tigers turn a 10-9 deficit into a 13-10 lead. When Jen Ginlikson and Maggie Stephenson scored the first two goals of the second half, it marked the first time the Rangers had ever held a lead in the series during the second 30 minutes of a game.
Amanda Ponzer led the Regis attack with four goals and an assist, while Gunlickson also struck for four goals. Seven Rangers scored at least one goal and three had a goal and an assist.
The Tigers continued their dominance of the Division II Rangers, improving to 9-0 in the series the rivalry that began in 1999, but it was obvious that Regis has closed the gap. The 15 goals are the most CC has allowed in the series and the three-point margin of victory is the smallest of the nine games.
Jess Van Doren had 15 saves for Colorado College and improved to 5-4. Brittany Farnick had 11 saves for the Rangers.
The Tigers will travel to Boulder on April 10 to face the University of Colorado club team, then travel to the East Coast for a three-game road trip that includes a match-up against defending national champion The College of New Jersey on April 20.
