PHILADELPHIA - Allison Frengs netted a free position goal with just five seconds remaining in regulation to lift Temple, 11-10, over UMass on Friday afternoon at Geasey Field in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. With the score deadlocked at 10, Frengs battled her way into the eight-meter to draw a foul and snap Temple's three-game losing skid. Temple improves to 2-6, 1-0 in the A-10, while the Minutewomen fall to 5-6, 0-1 in Conference play.

Casey Cech and Berkley Summerlin each scored three goals for the Owls, while Kelly Yemm added two. Whitney Richards contributed one goal and one assist and Johna Capaldo rounded out the Cherry and White scoring column. Cech, Frengs and Katie Yori all dished one assist on the day.

UMass was led by Meghan Reddy (Salem, N.H.) who scored three goals and Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) and Melynda Zwick (Holland, Pa.) who tallied two each. Typadis extends her consecutive game scoring streak to 35. Temple jumped out to a two-goal lead to start the game off of free position goals by Yemm and Summerlin.

The Minutewomen were not quiet for long, however, as they rattled off five straight goals to take a 5-2 lead with six minutes remaining. Ready netted two goals during that stretch, while Zwick, Merritt Cosgrove (Carisbad, Calif.) and Typadis all found the back of the net once. Summerlin ended the UMass scoring run at 4:04 when she scored an unassisted goal to make it 5-3 going into halftime.

The second half was action packed as the Owls mounted a furious comeback. UMass did not give up without a fight, as the Minutewomen tied the game twice in the final eight minutes. Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.) struck first for UMass with a free position goal at 35:32 to make it 6-3 in favor of the Minutewomen. Frengs scooped the ball to Cech, who put the ball into the lower left-hand corner of the goal to make it 6-4 at 21:50.

Samantha Sepulveda grabbed the ensuing draw control and motered down the field for UMass' seventh goal just 10 seconds later to make it a three-goal game yet again (7-4). Sepulveda finished the game with four groundballs and two draw controls.

The Owls then went to work, scoring four straight goals to take a one-goal advantage, 8-7, with just under 13 minutes to play. Cech found Capaldo at 20:48 to get it started and then Richards and Cech each added a free position goal to tie the game at seven with 13:36 remaining. Richards found Yemm at 12:53 to give Temple its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest. The teams traded goals and the lead for the next nine minutes until an unassisted goal by Typadis tied the game at 10 with 3:29 left to play.

Both teams had ample opportunity to score but it seemed that UMass was going to come out the victor when Reddy earned a free position shot with 49 seconds to go. Her shot was deemed dangerous, however, resulting in a yellow card and a turnover. The Owls raced down the field to set up their offense. After two shots failed to go in, Frengs' last second heroics gave Temple its third win of the season.

Temple goaltender Bridget McMullan had 10 saves, while Lauren McCarthy stopped eight Owl shots.

UMass returns home to host A-10 rival George Washington on Sunday at 12 p.m. This will be just the third home game for the Minutewomen this season. The game will be played in McGuirk Stadium and admission is free to all.
