Five Goals from Woods Boost Bentley by Franklin Pierce
WALTHAM, Mass. -- Sophomore Chris Woods (Duxbury/Sandwich HS) scored a career-high five goals for the Falcons to power the Bentley men's lacrosse team to a 13-6 win over Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action. The win improved the Falcons' record to 3-4 (2-2 NE-10), while the Ravens fell to 3-5 (0-4 NE-10).
After a tightly contested contest through three quarters, Woods helped Bentley put the game out of reach in the final frame with three goals in the last two minutes as the Falcons scored six unanswered goals to end the game.
Bentley got on the board first with a tally from senior Dalton Van Hatcher (Tigard, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) and the first collegiate goal for freshman Wyatt Couture (South Hadley/Avon Old Farms). The Ravens tied the game with a pair of goals 33 seconds apart from senior Michael Willis (Hingham) and junior Luke Ferreira (Farmington, Maine), then took the lead on a shot from sophomore Jason Flanigan (Shrewsbury) five minutes into the second quarter.
The Falcons got back on top with three goals in the last five minutes before halftime as freshman Kevin Gould (Duxbury/Duxbury HS) scored on an extra-man opportunity, then assisted on two tallies to give Bentley a 5-3 halftime lead. Franklin Pierce got back within one goal when sophomore Ryan Boller (New Cannan, Conn.) scored to make it 7-6 with 4:28 to go in the third quarter, but the Ravens could not muster any more offense for the rest of the game.
Senior Craig Cormier (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor HS) scored a pair of man-up goals at the end of the third and middle of the fourth and sophomore Andy Curtis (Chelmsford/Chelmsford HS) completed a hat trick before Woods capped the game with three straight tallies.
Freshman goalkeeper Andy Collette (South Hadley/South Hadley HS) made his collegiate debut and stopped an impressive 17 shots to earn the win, while senior Ben Lek (Gaithersburg, Md.) made 10 saves across the field for Franklin Pierce. The Falcons held a 34-32 edge in shots but the teams were even in shots on goal.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday with a trip to Smithfield, R.I., to battle No. 6 Bryant at 7:00 p.m. The team returns home on Tuesday, April 17, to host Saint Michael's at 6:00 p.m.
