#7 Hoyas Score Last 11 to Break Away from Loyola
Washington, D.C. -- A string of 11 unanswered goals over the final 33:32 gave the Georgetown University women's lacrosse team a 14-3 win over Loyola (Md.) this afternoon in Baltimore, Md. The Hoyas, who are 7-4 on the season and 3-0 in BIG EAST play, increased their conference winning streak to 37 in a row with the victory.
Georgetown had a balanced attack on the afternoon with eight different student-athletes scoring a goal, led by four from senior Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep). The game marked the 22nd time that Stanwick, who also added an assist, scored four or more goals in a game in her career.
Seniors Schulyer Sutton (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) and Brittany Baschuk (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) and sophomore Bunny O'Reilly (Blue Bell, Pa./Springside) each posted three points on the day with two goals and an assist apiece.
With 3:32 remaining in the first half, the Greyhounds evened the score at three goals apiece, but would remain off the scoreboard the rest of the way as seniors Maggie Koch (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) and Margaret Farland (Chapel Hill, N.C./St. Andrew's) combined to shutout Loyola in the second half. The Hoyas post a shutout in a half for the first time since blanking Monmouth in the first half of last year's NCAA Tournament first round matchup.
Stanwick on an assist from Sutton broke the tie with 2:19 remaining in the first stanza and Sutton capped off the half with an unassisted tally of her own with less than a minute to go, giving the Hoyas a 5-3 halftime lead.
The second half belonged all to Georgetown, as besides from the 9-0 edge on the second half scoreboard, they out shot the Greyhounds, 18-5, held an 8-2 advantage on draw controls and 12-7 edge in ground balls and forced 10 Loyola turnovers.
Koch made eight saves between the pipes for the Hoyas and senior Laura Cipro (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron), who anchored the GU defense had a team-best five ground balls.
Georgetown returns to the turf on Wednesday for a road contest at the University of Virginia. First face-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
