Hofstra Continues Winning Ways with Overtime Triumph

Norfolk, VA -- Senior midfielder Becky Thorn broke a six-all tie with
37 seconds left in the first overtime and the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team held on for a 7-6 victory over Old Dominion at Foreman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The win was the fourth straight for the Pride, which improved to 6-4 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
The Lady Monarchs, meanwhile, slipped to 4-5 and 2-1 in conference action.

The win was the four straight overtime victory for the Pride, who has won six of their last seven games that have gone past 60 minutes and have a 14-3 record over their last 17 overtime contests.

After Hofstra fell behind 6-5 at the 15:25 mark on a goal from Kaelyn Schival of ODU, the Pride would knot the score with just over eight minutes left when senior attacker Kimberly Hillier tallied the second of her two goals on the afternoon. Hillier would also add an assist in the contest and tied Old Dominion's Caroline Jacobs (one goal, two assists) for game-high honors in points.

As was the story on Friday night in the Pride's 11-4 victory over William & Mary, junior goalie Maisie Osteen was the story late in the contest. In the waning moments of the opening session of the first overtime, Old Dominion looked to be in good position to score the go-ahead goal, but Osteen stone-walled Kelly Kimener on a free-position shot to keep the score even at six.

Thorn would tally the game-winner with just 37 seconds left in overtime after the Pride gained control of the draw to start the second part of the overtime period.

Hillier would come up huge after the Thorn goal as she scooped up her game-high third draw control of the day. The Lady Monarchs would have one last shot, though, as after a Pride turnover Ashley Stanwick was able to get a shot off that would have tied the game, but the ball went wide and Hofstra prevailed.

Thorn finished with a pair of goals, including the game-winner, while freshman midfielder Corrine Gandolfi chipped in with two goals as well.

Senior midfielder Casey McGrath added three ground balls, two draw controls, two caused turnovers and a goal in the contest and Osteen finished with seven saves.

Six different players tallied goals for Old Dominion, who got the three points from Jacobs and two from Katie Veneziale. Jessica Noone picked up a game-high five ground balls in the game and Sara Larson saved nine shots in net.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday, April 13 when they host George Mason at 7:00 p.m.
