Canisius Routs Niagara for First MAAC Win of Season

Six different players tallied at least two goals as the Canisius College women's lacrosse team earned its first MAAC win of the season with a 17-3 defeat of Niagara Tuesday afternoon in Lewiston, N.Y.

Lauren Walsh (Auburn, N.Y.) and Whitney Card (Alton, Ont.) each had three goals and an assist while Brett Poissant (Syracuse, N.Y.), Ashley Gray (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Bobbi Jo Harris (Beaverton, Ont.) and Shelby Grigg (Watertown, N.Y.) each had two goals for the Blue and Gold.

"It was good to see our team respond with a well-played game today," Canisius coach Scott Teeter said. "It's great to get contributions from a number of our girls and not look to rely on one or two our players."

The Golden Griffins (4-8, 1-2 MAAC) scored the first two goals of the game before Vanessa Schultz notched the first of her three goals on the day for the Purple Eagles (1-7, 0-3).

The Griffs closed out the half by scoring the next six goals coming from six different players. The teams split the first four goals of the second half to make the score 10-3 with 16:35 remaining. Canisius tallied the last seven goals of the game for the final margin.

"It's always great to get a win, especially when playing Niagara," Teeter said. "This win provides us with some momentum heading into an important weekend road trip."

Rasheeda Brenton (Clarence, N.Y.) had seven saves for Canisius while Kristen Engel had six saves for the Purple Eagles.

Canisius continues its three-game conference road swing April 13, at Fairfield.

Game Notes: Canisius won its first Battle of the Bridge contest since Nov. 11, in volleyball… Awehiyo Thomas (Six Nations, Ont.) returned to the lineup after missing the previous three games and had two assists… Amanda Marts (Hamburg, N.Y.) tallied her first goal since March 14, at Gannon… Brittany Farrugia (Elbridge, N.Y.) had her fourth goal in five games… The two goals for Harris and Grigg were career highs… Walsh had four points after her second scoreless game of the season… The four points for Card were a season high for the junior and extended her point streak to 41 games, which is fifth-longest in the country… Canisius has won three straight over Niagara by a combined score of 43-21.
