St. Mary's (Md.) Posts 11-4 Win over Goucher
St. Mary's City, MD – Junior middie Cyrus Albertson (Chevy Chase, MD/St. John's College [DC]) scored a hat trick on his first three shots of the game en route to a four-goal, one-assist performance as the St. Mary's (Md.) College men's lacrosse team collected an 11-4 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Goucher College Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore attacker Sam Fitzpatrick (Littleton, CO/Arapahoe) opened up the scoring with his 13th goal of the season at 9:08 to give Goucher (5-5, 4-3 CAC) a 1-0 lead. But back-to-back goals by Albertson in a 36-second span put the Seahawks up 2-1 at the end of the first period.
St. Mary's rattled off four unanswered goals, including a pair from freshman middie Ryan Alexander (Laurel, MD/Palotti), in the second to post a 6-1 advantage at halftime.
Junior captain Pat Oliphant (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) starred for the Seahawks (8-4, 4-2 CAC) in the third frame with a hat trick of his own as SMCM outscored the Gophers, 5-1. Senior attacker Dan Flamholz (Baltimore, MD/The Park School) notched lone Goucher goal on an extra-man opportunity at 7:24.
Goucher did all the scoring in the fourth stanza as senior attacker Bryant Boucher (North Wales, PA/North Penn) and junior middie Dave Duff (Westwood, MA/Suffield Academy) each found the back of the net with unassisted goals.
As a team, St. Mary's out-shot the Gophers, 39-22, and beat them on ground balls, 47-27. Sophomore middie Marc DiPasquale (Joppa, MD/Boys' Latin) captured 14-of-17 face-offs for the Seahawks.
Oliphant finished the game with four goals, while Alexander had two. Junior middie Brett Caron (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) led all players with five caused turnovers and senior defenseman Michael Alcamo (Severna Park, MD/Severn) scooped up nine ground balls.
Four different players scored for Goucher, while junior defenseman William Beaver (Frederick, MD/Urbana) had six ground balls.
Seniors Rich Barr (Salisbury, MD/Worcester Prep) and Matt Wiest (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal) combined for 10 stops for the Seahawk win.
The Gophers' junior Austin Main (Berlin, MD/Decatur) turned away 19 shots between the pipes.
St. Mary's returns to action on April 12 when they travel to Catholic University for a league game at 4:00, while Goucher hosts York (Pa.) College on Thursday as well at 4:00 in CAC action.
