St. Mary's (Md.) Hands R-MC 13-8 Setback

St. Mary's City, MD – Four different players scored two or more goals in leading the St. Mary's (Md.) College women's lacrosse team to a 13-8 non-conference victory over Randolph-Macon College Tuesday afternoon.

The Seahawks' sophomore Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) paced all players with four goals and an assist, while senior Danielle Miller (Montville, NJ/Montville) chipped in a hat trick.

St. Mary's (7-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead at 27:08 behind goals from Miller and freshman Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, MD/St. John's College [DC]). The Yellow Jackets answered with two of their own as junior Alex Wright (Bethesda, MD) and senior Lizzie Spero (Phoenix, MD) found the back of the net, knotting the game at 2-2 at 18:42.

The two teams exchanged a goal before the Seahawks put up back-to-back goals for a 5-3 margin at 9:50. However, R-MC fired in three straight, including two from freshman Kelly Cramer (Charlottesville, VA), to post a 6-5 edge. Both squads traded a goal again to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-6 advantage at halftime.

The Seahawks regrouped during intermission and started the second half with four straight, including two from Carrier, to overcome their one-goal deficit and take a 10-7 lead at 12:37.

St. Mary's defensive unit did its part as well, holding the Yellow Jackets to just two shots and one goal as senior Traci Phipps (Annapolis, MD) notched an unassisted goal at 9:03. The Seahawks tacked on three more goals, including a pair from Miller, to close out the game.

As a team, SMCM posted a 35-15 advantage on shots and out-hustled the Yellow Jackets 18 of 30 ground balls. The Seahawks also won 16 draw controls to R-MC's seven (7).

Fallon-Oben ended the game with two goals and an assist, while sophomore Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, MD/The Park School) added two goals. Junior Elizabeth Northfield (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) had a game-high six draw controls and freshman Karissa Carroll (Long Island, NY/Ward Melville) scooped up five ground balls.

Spero, Wright and Cramer all had two goals for R-MC with Cramer notching an assist as well. Phipps chipped a goal and two assists.

Senior goalie Melissa Puzak (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) made six saves in the win, while junior Lindsay Schabert (Falmouth, VA) had 15 stops for the Yellow Jackets.
