Costello Goal Helps Wingate Edge WJU, 11-10

Wheeling, W.Va. -- Wingate University junior attack Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) scored a goal with 1:27 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs an 11-10 NCAA Division II victory over Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) University Tuesday afternoon.

With the victory, Wingate improves to 7-4 overall. Wheeling Jesuit is 4-7 overall. The Bulldogs visit Belmont Abbey College Thursday at 4 p.m. The Cardinals host Saint Vincent (Pa.) College Saturday, April 21 at a time to be announced.

Costello was assisted on the game-winner by junior midfielder Stephen Torkington (Coronado, Calif.). The goal was Costello's only tally of the afternoon. The Laney High School graduate dished out two assists.

Wingate was six-for-six on face-offs in the pivotal fourth quarter. Individually, Bulldog junior short-stick defensive midfielder Bob Chinn (Mooresville, N.C.) was five-for-five on face-offs during the fourth frame.

Bulldog sophomore attack men Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, Va.) and Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) scored three goals each to lead the Wingate offense. Otterblad also contributed one assist. WJU senior attack Mark Greaney (Troy, Mich.) had six goals and one assist to lead all scorers.

Wheeling Jesuit outshot Wingate 43-31. Bulldog junior goalkeeper David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) recorded 16 saves for the visitors. Wheeling Jesuit sophomore netminder Bryan Jack (Pickerington, Ohio) notched 11 saves. Both goalkeepers went the distance Tuesday afternoon.
