Potsdam Defeats Oneonta, 10-6
The visiting Potsdam Bears left town today with a key 10-6 SUNYAC win over host Oneonta this afternoon in men's lacrosse action. Potsdam 4-4/1-0) scored four times in the final quarter to break open an otherwise close game throughout for its road win to open conference play. The Bears out scored Oneonta (9-3/0-2) 6-2 in the second half en route to the victory.
Potsdam jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter with a pair of goals within 45 seconds of each other. Sophomores Conor O'Neill (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) and Corey Reinhart (Albany, NY/Colonie) each registered unassisted goals for the Bears.
Oneonta (9-3/0-2) battled back to take the lead on three unanswered goals to start the second quarter. Junior Tyler Dunne (Cazenovia,
NY/Cazenovia) scored a pair of unassisted goals to get Oneonta back to even before sophomore Mike Evans (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) scored unassisted to give the Red Dragons its only lead of the game at 3-2.
Reinhart scored back-to-back goals including an extra man goal to give Potsdam the lead back at 4-3 with just under six minutes to play in the second quarter.
Senior Mike Schanz (Endwell, NY/Maine Endwell) scored the equalizer for Oneonta less than a minute later as the half closed with the game deadlocked at five goals each.
Senior Mike Vaverchak (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) opened the third quarter with the first of his three second half goals to give the Bears its lead back.
An extra man goal by freshman Scott Weiner (Suffern, NY/Suffern) knotted the game back up at 6-6 before a Potsdam goal by O'Neill with 16 seconds left in the quarter gave the Bears the lead for good.
In the fourth quarter Potsdam scored two quick goals to build its lead to three goals at 9-6 before a goal by Oneonta senior Neal Campbell (Merrick, NY/Mepham) cut the Bears' lead back to two goals.
Potsdam senior Brian Hondorf (Webster-Schroeder, NY/MCC) was immense in the goal today for the Bears making 17 saves including seven in the final quarter.
Oneonta will be back in action this Saturday at home when they host rival Cortland beginning at 2:00 p.m.
