Tcheyan Helps Haverford Past Ursinus, 9-4
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Max Tcheyan scored a game-high five goals and added an assist to lead Haverford past Ursinus 9-4 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
The Fords (6-4, 3-2 CC) won 15 of the 17 face-offs while scoring six of their nine goals in the second half to improve to 5-1 all time against the Bears (7-3, 3-2 CC), snapping Ursinus' four-game winning streak.
K.C. Peterson made 17 saves for Haverford and Matt Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) collected 12 saves, while Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) tallied a goal and assist in the losing effort.
In a defensive first half, the Fords took a 3-0 lead scoring the lone goal of the first quarter and the first two of the second. It took two minutes, 27 seconds after the opening whistle for Shane Hafer to find the back of the net for Haverford for a 1-0 lead.
Tcheyan recorded back-to-back goals with the first coming 23 seconds into the second quarter on a man-down situation. Two minutes later, he finished a pass from Alex Guy for a 3-0 edge.
With less than three minutes to play before halftime, the Bears got a goal apiece from Jason Patterson (West Chester, PA/Unionville) and Mangin to head into the locker rooms with a one-goal deficit.
Like the second quarter, Tcheyan opened the third quarter with a quick goal to mark this third of the day for a 4-2 lead.
Mike Tori (Springfield, PA/Springfield) responded 17 seconds later with a goal on an assist from Mangin to make it 4-3.
The Fords used a 5-0 run over the next 22 minutes for a commanding 9-3 lead, getting one more goal in the third and four in the fourth including two from Tcheyan to get ahead for good.
Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) registered the final goal for Ursinus with 44 ticks left in the game for the final margin.
The Bears return to action on Saturday against No. 3 Gettysburg. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
