Lewis-Lamonica's Career Night Leads #13 Tigers to Win
PRINCETON--Katie Lewis-Lamonica scored a career-high seven goals, the most by a Princeton player in 17 years, to lead the Tigers to an 18-7 victory over Temple in a non-conference women's lacrosse game played at Class of 1952 Stadium Wednesday night.
Lewis-Lamonica, who scored three times in the first half and four times in the first 13 minutes of the second half before leaving the game, became the first Princeton player to score seven in a game since Phyllis Fogarty had seven against Lehigh in 1990. By the time the Princeton junior scored her seventh, with 17:06 left, the Tigers had a 14-3 lead.
Princeton (5-4), which defeated Temple for the ninth straight season, led 7-3 at halftime but scored the first seven goals of the second half. In addition to Lewis-Lamonica's four goals in that stretch, Kathleen Miller, Kristin Schwab and Kristin Morrison also had goals in the first 13 minutes of the half.
Miller had five goals for Princeton, tying Jenny Bristow '94 for eighth place on the team's all-time scoring list with 172 career points. Lewis-Lamonica moved within two goals of the 100 mark for her career.
Allison Frengs, Katie Yori and Kelly Yemm each had two goals for Temple (4-7), which hasn't defeated Princeton since the 1998 season.
Princeton took a 10-goal lead when Morrison scored her first goal with 20 minutes left in the game. The Tigers led by at least an eight-goal margin the rest of the way.
Miller and Lewis-Lamonica scored for Princeton in the first 5:20 of the game to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead, and Emery Maine's first career goal with 20 minutes left in the first half gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead and forced a Temple timeout. Temple would then cut its deficit to 4-2 on Yemm's goal two minutes later, but the Tigers would then take control with a three-goal run, including goals from Miller and Lewis-Lamonica in a 21-second span, to take a 7-2 lead.
Katie Cox added three assists for Princeton and also scored a goal, while Holly McGarvie had two assists in addition to a second-half goal. The Tigers outshot Temple 31-19.
Lewis-Lamonica, who leads Princeton with 32 goals this season, joins three other players in addition to Fogarty to have scored seven goals in a game for Princeton. The team record for goals in a game is eight, set by Kathleen Mahoney against Brown in 1981 and equalled by Catherine McCarthy against Yale in 1989.
Princeton hosts Harvard Saturday afternoon in the first game of a women's /men's doubleheader at Class of 1952 Stadium. Game time is noon, and the game will be televised live by Patriot 8 in the Princeton area.
