Stevens Falls to Drew in Non-Conference Action

MADISON, N.J. - Lindsey Perno celebrated her 21st birthday by scoring three goals, assisting on five others and controlling eight draws as Drew defeated Stevens 17-9 in women’s lacrosse action at Ranger Stadium. Allie Bailly scored four goals to lead Drew and first-year Sam Silver scored three times as Drew improved to 8-3 on the season. Alyssa Pigott had a pair of goals for the Ducks, who fall to 5-6 on the year.

The Rangers jumped out to a quick lead as Perno grabbed the opening draw and raced downfield to feed a cutting Morgan Kenney who shot hard and low for the opening tally just 29 seconds into the match. Stevens countered through Kaitlyn Roes to tie it at 1-1 90 seconds in. Drew then reeled off the next four goals to take a commanding lead that they would not relinquish. Alex Weber Reitz fired home from a Meghan Santaniello pass at 26:14 before Perno set up Allie Bailly. Samantha Silver slid in behind the defense to grab a Santaniello feed and net from close range. After Perno grabbed another draw, she set up Bailly for the games’ sixth goal and a 5-1 Ranger lead.

The Ducks got one back after ten minutes of play, but Drew scored two beautiful goals to lengthen the advantage. Courtney Cunningham caught a pass from Perno and fired a backhanded shot from six meters out that gave the keeper no chance. AWR followed up with a bullet on an unassisted goal for a 7-1 lead. Allie Bailly added an eight before Pigott countered for the Ducks. Cunningham scored one more off a feed from the birthday girl. All of this scoring, 9-3, occurred in just the first 15 minutes of the game. The frenetic pace slowed down as only a Dara Perriello goal for Stevens. Perno had been the driving force in the first for Drew with five assists, six draw controls, a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover.

Up 9-4 at the half, the Rangers didn’t let up with Perno opening the scoring two minutes into the half. Pigott responded with one of her own. Santaniello set up Sam Silver before Perno, who shares a birthday with Red Sock Jason Varitek and former Red Sock Trot Nixon, scored her second of the game. Silver converted another Santaniello feed for a 13-5 Drew lead. Stevens scored twice to make it 13-7 and bring a little tension into the game, but the Rangers responded with the best goal of the game. Weber Reitz controlled the draw and fired a pass to Santaniello just over midfield that the junior made a nice catch to control. After driving towards goal, Santaniello threw a well anticipated pass to Bailly who drilled it into the back of the net for a 14-7 lead with 14 left of the clock.

Alex Weber Reitz got one of her own a couple of minutes later on a nice drive and hard high shot. Cunningham picked up her third before Liz Mather scored for Stevens. Guy Verhofstadt, the Prime Minister of Belgium, was born on April 11th, as was the scorer of Drew’s final goal, as Perno tallied her third. Stevens got a consolation goal in the final minute, but the outcome had been decided by then.

With the win Drew improves to 8-3 on the season as they head into a crucial MAC match-up with Susquehanna on Saturday.
