Kellogg Leads Old Dominion to CAA Victory over Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Freshman midfielder Ashley Kellogg (Downington West H.S./Downingtown, Pa.) scored a season-high three goals, including two in the second half, to lead Old Dominion University (5-5, 2-1) to its second win in the last three games with a 9-8 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Towson University (4-7, 1-3) at the Tigers' Johnny Unitas Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Kellogg gave the Lady Monarchs a 1-0 lead with 18:29 remaining in the first half by scoring off a pass from senior Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg H.S./Gaithersburg, Md.). However, the Tigers quickly responded with three straight goals to take a 3-1 advantage with 9:28 remaining in the period.

Led by junior Kelly Kimener (Oakton H.S./Oakton, Va.), the Lady Monarchs regained their lead by scoring four unanswered goals to take a 5-3 less than three minutes into the second half. After senior attacker Ashley Stanwick (St. Mary's H.S./Annapolis, Md.) scored to cut the deficit to 3-2, Kimener tallied back-to-back goals to give Old Dominion a 4-3 advantage. Senior midfielder Katie Veneziale (Downington H.S./Downington, Pa.) upped the Lady Monarchs' advantage to 5-3 with her 15th goal of the season, an unassisted marker past junior Mandy Corry (West Essex H.S./North Caldwell, N.J.) with 27:25 remaining in the second half.

Sophomore midfielder Hillary Fratzke (Queen Anne's County H.S./Centerville, Md.) tied the game at 5-5 by scoring two straight goals in a two-minute span, but Old Dominion responded by scoring three consecutive goals, including a pair by Kellogg, to take an 8-5 lead with 20:26 left in regulation.

Sophomore Meggie McNamara (Fayetteville-Manlius H.S./Fayetteville, N.Y.) cut the Tigers' deficit to 8-6 with 18:56 remaining when she scored her 26th goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Britt Woodfield (South Carroll H.S./New Windsor, Md.). Freshman Nikki Marcinik (Southern H.S./Deale, Md.) followed by tallying her ninth goal of the year off a Fratzke assist with 12:45 remaining, but Jacobs gave the Lady Monarchs a two-goal lead when she scored an unassisted tally with 3:07 left in the stanza.

With 48 seconds remaining, the Tigers cut the Old Dominion advantage to 9-8 when McNamara scored off a Fratzke feed. Towson won the ensuing draw control, but a turnover with 36 seconds remaining allowed the Lady Monarchs to preserve the victory.

Jacobs led the Lady Monarchs with two goals and one assist while Veneziale posted a goal with two assists. Junior goalkeeper Sara Larson (Mercy H.S./Sylvan Lake, Mich.) led a strong defensive effort by the Lady Monarchs as she made 16 saves, including nine in the second half.

Fratzke scored two goals and two assists in a losing effort for Towson, which played in its fifth one-goal game of the season. McNamara and Marcinik each added two goals for the Tigers.

The Tigers will continue their three-game homestand on Sunday afternoon when they host William & Mary at Unitas Stadium at 1:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Old Dominion will play at Delaware on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
