Karcsh's Nine Points Lead Geo. Washington by La Salle
PHILADELPHIA, PA - Junior Kristin Karcsh (Kennett Square, PA/Bishop Shanahan) extended her point-scored streak to 11 consecutive games with a sterling nine-point performance as the George Washington women's lacrosse team cruised past Atlantic 10 foe La Salle, 20-10, in the first-ever night lacrosse game at McCarthy Stadium on Friday.
Karcsh's nine points came on five goals and four assists and tied the second-most points scored by one player in a single game in program history. She has scored at least one point in all 11 of the Colonials games this season and paces the team with single-season career-highs of 31 goals and 12 assists. Karcsh, along with sophomore teammate Katie Lilly (Riva, MD/South River), also finished with a team-high three draw controls.
GW (6-5, 2-1 A-10) fell behind 1-0 after 19 seconds and 2-1 after 2:28, but rattled off five unanswered goals and 10 of the games' next 11 to put La Salle away before halftime. Senior Kristina Harvey (North Falmouth, CT/Falmouth) netted three goals during the Colonials first five-goal spurt, while Karcsh added three points on two goals and an assist in their second five-goal run to open an 11-3 cushion with 8:20 left in the first half.
La Salle's Catie Borneman tallied a pair of goals around a score by junior Laura Wunk (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) to cut GW's lead to 12-5 at the intermission.
The Explorer's Tiffany Grossi bookended goals around junior Hayley McDonough's (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) second goal of the game to begin the second half, but GW reeled off six straight goals to stretch its lead 19-7 with 10:54 to play. Karcsh had another three points (one goal, two assists) during that run, while sophomore Katherine Sampson (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) capped the run with two goals.
Karcsh got GW to 20 goals for the first time since hanging a school-record 25 against Howard in March 2004 with her fifth goal of the game with 3:26 left. The 20 goals are the second-most scored by the Colonials in one game in program history.
Harvey finished with a career-high four goals, Sampson posted a hat trick and McDonough (two goals, one assist) and sophomore Meghan Cratty (Wilton, CT/Wilton) (one goal, two assists) finished with three points apiece. Wunk and senior Molly Gannon (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) both added two goals, while junior Katelyn Honeyford (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown), reigning A-10 Co-Player of the Week, rounded out GW's goal scorers with one tally.
Lilly, senior Kim Andreola (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and rookie Laura Dominiak (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) led the way with three ground balls apiece. Lilly also added four caused turnovers. Junior Cailtin Garman (Baltimore, MD/Friends School) made two saves in just over 38 minutes before giving way to senior Emily Fortunato (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale), who made three stops in the final 21 minutes. Garman picked up the victory, the 20th of her career. GW held a 29-18 edge in shots.
GW can move into a share of second place in the A-10 with a victory at Temple on Sunday. Opening draw is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
