#13 Princeton Routs Harvard, Improves to 2-1 in Ivy
PRINCETON--Princeton actually trailed Harvard six minutes into its women's lacrosse game against the Crimson Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Tigers certainly made up for it in the final 54 minutes.
The Tigers would go on to score the next nine goals in a 12-minute span after falling behind and got a season-high five goals from freshman Kristin Morrison and three goals from three other players on the way to a 19-5 win over the Crimson, their 15th straight over Harvard.
Princeton (6-4, 2-1 Ivy) now enters a huge stretch in its season, beginning with a game at Ivy-undefeated (5-0) and sixth-ranked Penn Wednesday night. The Tigers scored 18 goals against Temple Wednesday night before Saturday's 19-goal outburst and have won two straight games for the first time since early March.
"Are we where we wanted to be right now, maybe not," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "But we have the chance to control where we go from here on out. That's all you can really ask for at this point."
The Tigers and Yale (4-1 Ivy) each have one league loss, with the Bulldogs having defeated Princeton last Saturday in New Haven. Dartmouth fell to 3-2 in Ivy play when they lost at Penn 13-8 on Saturday.
Princeton quickly recovered from Kaitlin Martin's early goal for Harvard by scoring three times in a 25-second span right before the 23-minute mark. The Tigers then got another goal from Kathleen Miller and two more goals in a 49-second span near the 20-minute mark to take a 6-1 lead, and Holly McGarvie's first goal of the game with 11:26 left in the half gave her team a 9-1 lead.
McGarvie would later score twice in a 15-second span, and Morrison would score on a free-position shot with 10 seconds left in the half to give the Tigers a 13-2 advantage at the break.
Morrison entered the game with five goals for the season but equalled that mark Saturday to lead eight Princeton players who had a goal. Miller, McGarvie and Katie Cox each had three goals for the Tigers as Princeton scored on 19 of its 30 shots.
"Overall it was a good team win," said Morrison, now one of seven Princeton players with 10 or more goals this season. "I think the Yale game was a bit of a wake-up call for us and we feel like we're in good position right now."
Martin scored four of Harvard's five goals. The Crimson (2-9, 0-3 Ivy) haven't beaten Princeton since the 1992 season.
The Tigers won 17 of the game's 25 draw controls. Princeton took a 10-goal advantage and forced a running clock with 7:57 left in the first half and never led by fewer than 10 goals the rest of the game.
Miller's five points overall (three goals, two assists) gave her 177 career points, moving her into seventh place all-time at Princeton. Her two assists gave her 61 career assists, tied for fourth all-time at Princeton.
Wednesday night's game at Penn begins at 7:00 p.m. at Franklin Field. A live internet audio broadcast of the game with Ed Benkin will be available at GoPrincetonTigers.com.
