#16 Hampden-Sydney Edges #17 Washington & Lee
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 14, 2007)—Hampden-Sydney's 16th-ranked lacrosse team fell behind early, 4-1, in the first quarter but held the Generals to one goal over the final three quarters to earn a 6-5 come-from behind victory at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff field on Saturday afternoon. Senior Ryan Harrington (Dallas, TX/Plano) led the Tigers, scoring four goals on the day. With the win, the Tigers improve to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while Washington and Lee drops to 7-4 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.
Hampden-Sydney notched the first goal as Harrington found the back of the net at the 12:16 mark off an assist from Andrew O'Shea (Richmond, VA/Collegiate). Over the next ten minutes, the Generals would score four unanswered goals to build a three goal advantage, 4-1. In the second quarter, Hampden-Sydney settled down as Harrington scored two more goals. The Tigers were also able to hold the Generals scoreless in the second frame, cutting Washington and Lee's halftime advantage to one goal, 4-3.
In the third quarter, Thomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb School) scored two of Hampden-Sydney's three goals, giving the Tigers a 6-4 lead with 3:54 remaining in the quarter. Washington and Lee answered with a goal only a minute later, cutting the lead to one, 6-5. In the final quarter, Hampden-Sydney used ball control and solid defense to hold on to their one goal lead, finishing the fourth quarter scoreless and giving the Tigers the 6-5 victory.
Harrington led the Tigers with four goals, while Jennings notched two goals and recorded one assist. Senior Scott Russell (Darien, CT/Darien) recorded 9 saves for the Tigers in 60 minutes of action. The Tigers won 5-of-14 face-offs and were 0-of-8 on man-up opportunities. Hampden-Sydney recorded 26 ground balls on the afternoon and were successful on 14-of-21 clear attempts.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Saturday, April 21, as Hampden-Sydney will travel to Lynchburg, VA to face ODAC-rival Lynchburg College. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm and will be broadcast live on http://hams-av.hsc.edu/lacrosse/.

The Tigers (10-2, 2-1) opened the scoring as Ryan Harrington scored off a feed from Andrew O'Shea at 12:16 in the first quarter, but the Generals responded with four goals to close out the initial quarter. H-SC began its comeback in the second quarter when two scores by Harrington at 4:48 and 2:14, respectively, cut the W&L advantage to 4-3 at the break.
Hampden-Sydney continued its rally in the third quarter with the game-tying score from Thomas Jennings at 13:38 and the go-ahead goal from Harrington at 10:40 in the third. Jennings found the back off the net again at the 3:54 mark of the third quarter to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead and a goal by junior attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) off an assist from senior midfielder Charlie Clarke (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) with 2:44 remaining in the third quarter wasn't enough to spark a complete Generals' comeback.
W&L (7-4, 2-1) was paced by Rider, who had one goal and one assist. Clarke added two helpers, while senior goalkeeper Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) stopped 14 would-be goals.
