No. 3 Gettysburg Powers Past Ursinus, 13-2
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Joe Brody netted a hat trick, while three other players added two goals each to lead No. 3 Gettysburg past Ursinus 13-2 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
Zach Pucci and Ben Sufrin scored twice and handed out an assist to help the Bullets (9-2, 5-1 CC) race out to a 6-0 halftime lead while holding the Bears (7-4, 3-3 CC) scoreless for three quarters to remain in first place in the conference.
Jimmy Gates won 10 out of 13 face-offs, while goalie Pat Vaughn made five saves in the defensive efforts.
Jason Patterson (West Chester, PA/Unionville) and Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) tallied the goals for Ursinus. Matt Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) tallied 10 saves in goal.
Gettysburg opened the first quarter with a 5-0 run and built on the lead from there. Sufrin scored first at the 10:05 mark of the period. Just 2:27 later, Dyer connected on a pass Kevin Freehill. Brody followed at the 4:41 mark on an assist from Dyer for his first career game winner.
Sufrin scored less than a minute later, and Pucci ran the lead to 5-0 with just two seconds showing on the clock.
Brody scored the lone goal of the second quarter, and ultimately, Gettysburg would pile up a 12-0 lead before Patterson broke up the shutout with just 3:29 to play in the fourth quarter.
Greg Montgomery took advantage of an Ursinus penalty with 2:56 left in the game for the 13th goal, but Mangin recorded his goal off a pass from Patterson to close out the scoring.
The Bears returns to action on Wednesday against Neumann. Game time is 7:00 p.m.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – No. 3 Gettysburg used a balanced offensive attack and nearly 55 minutes of shutout goalkeeping by senior Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) to defeat Ursinus, 13-2, in Centennial Conference (CC) action at E. Frost Snell Field on Saturday afternoon. Vaughan made five saves in the game without allowing a goal to lower his season goals against average to 4.27.
Gettysburg (9-2, 5-1 CC) freshman attackman Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) netted a hat trick for his third consecutive multi-goal game. He was one of four Bullets with three points in the game. Sophomore attackman Zach Pucci (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and junior midfielder Ben Sufrin (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) each had two goals and an assist, and junior attackman Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep [Md.]) had a goal and two helpers. Sufrin's three points matched his career high, and Pucci's two goals tied for the best outing of his career.
For the Bears (7-4, 3-3 CC), sophomore attackman Jason Patterson led the offense with a goal and an assist, and junior attackman Dane Mangin added a goal.
The Bullets were again able to play keep away thanks to senior midfielder Jimmy Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), who won 10-of-13 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls. Sophomore midfielder Tim Stanton (Phoenix, Md./Loyola Blakefield) took four faceoffs and won them all. Gettysburg outshot Ursinus 46-18 and has compiled a 108-49 advantage in the last three games.
