Oneonta Falls to No. 19 Cortland, 15-7

The visiting Red Dragons of Cortland blew open a close game today in the third quarter en route to a 15-7 win against Oneonta State today in SUNYAC men's lacrosse action. Cortland (7-4/3-0) held a 6-4 lead late in the third quarter before closing the quarter with three unanswered goals, which Oneonta (9-4/0-3) never could recover from.

Cortland opened the scoring early in the first quarter on an unassisted goal by junior Adam Hyde (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) at the 13:49 mark.

Oneonta tied the game less than one minute later with an unassisted goal by senior Neal Campbell (Merrick, NY/Mepham). Campbell finished the game with a pair of goals and one assist to lead Oneonta's offense today.

Cortland out scored Oneonta 4-1 over the final 9:26 of the opening quarter to take control 5-2 at the close of the first stanza. Senior Mike Felice (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) notched a pair of goals in helping the Red Dragons get its lead.

A scoreless second quarter had Oneonta feeling pretty good against its nationally ranked, and defending Div. III national champions as halftime came with the score still 5-2.

Oneonta scored the first goal of the second half when sophomore John Carberry (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) tallied an unassisted goal as he was being checked to the ground.

Josh Cittadino (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) registered an unassisted goal at the 7:48 mark of the third quarter to give Cortland its three-goal lead back.

The host Red Dragons wouldn't go quietly as junior Tyler Dunne (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) scored a goal off of an assist by Campbell to cut the visitors lead back to two goals.

For Oneonta, that would be as close as they would get as Cortland closed the third quarter and opened the fourth quarter with a total of six unanswered goals to put the game out of reach.

Junior Ryan Heath (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) and Felice scored a pair of goals each during the stretch of goals.

Oneonta will be back in action again on Monday when they travel to Ithaca for their rescheduled game with the Bombers beginning at 4:00 p.m.
