Oneonta State Edges Buffalo State
Oneonta State scored seven unanswered goals within a seven minute span in the second half to erase an 11-8 deficit en route to a come-from-behind 15-13 victory today against Buffalo State in SUNYAC women's lacrosse action. Oneonta (6-5/1-1) got six goals on the day from senior Erin Maybeck (Huntington, NY/Huntington) including three during the second half run.
Buffalo State (7-2/0-2) made the game interesting with a pair of goals in the waning minutes and had an opportunity to cut Oneonta's lead to one goal with 58 seconds remaining on a free position shot, but Oneonta sophomore Eileen O'Toole (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) came up with a big stop.
Maybeck got things started for Oneonta as she took the opening draw control right down for a shot on goal that found the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead just 18 seconds into the game. Buffalo State stormed back with four straight goals three of which were scored within 51 seconds. Shantel Ackley (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Stephanie Georgopolous (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue), Katie Lyons (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) and Meagan Powers (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) each scored unassisted goals to give the Bengals a 4-1 lead.
Buffalo State held a 7-5 lead late in the first half before Oneonta ripped off three straight goals to end the half to take an 8-7 lead into the break. Sophomore Jenna Fingar (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) and junior Erica Krisak (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) both scored in the final minute to give Oneonta its one-goal lead at halftime.
It looked like Buffalo State was in control of the game early on in the second half as they scored the first four goals to take their 11-8 lead. Lyons tallied two goals while Georgopolous and Ackley each scored one.
Oneonta then seized control of the game with its first goal of the second half coming 18:50 in by Maybeck. Maybeck would score two more times during the seven-goal run including back-to-back goals to end the string. Powers and Ackley scored for Buffalo State just 13 seconds apart with under two minutes to go in the game, but the big save by O'Toole ended the Bengals hopes for a comeback.
O'Toole finished the game with nine saves on the afternoon. Oneonta will be in action again this Wednesday on the road with a game at Potsdam beginning at 4:00 p.m.
