Washington & Jefferson Falls to Wittenberg

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Wittenberg built a 5-1 halftime lead and hung on to defeat Washington & Jefferson, 12-8, in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

The Tigers (5-4) netted the first four goals of the game before W&J sophomore midfielder Kyle Worthley (Marietta, Ga./Harrison) scored with 4:22 left in the first half to make it a 4-1 contest.

Wittenberg freshman midfielder Ted Winders (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Twp.) scored two minutes later for a 5-1 Tiger lead after 30 minutes of play.

Worthley and junior midfielder Russ Kalkstein (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) both netted two goals during the third quarter to help W&J narrow its deficit to 6-5 heading into the fourth quarter.

The teams traded a pair of goals for the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter, but Wittenberg freshman midfielder Jeff Capella (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) netted back-to-back goals 75 seconds apart to seal the Tiger victory.

Capella finished with a game-high four goals for the Tigers, while freshman attacker Tim Gates (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) collected two goals and one assist. A total of eight different Tigers scored during the win. Senior goalie Pat Garlock (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles) stopped 11 shots.

Kalkstein and Worthley both netted hat tricks for the Presidents. Kalkstein dished out two assists, while Worthley assisted on one goal. Junior midfielder Chris Vogel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and freshman attacker Matt Burns (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) rounded out the W&J goal scorers.

Junior goalie Andrew Reid (Franklin, Tenn./University School of Nashville) kept Washington & Jefferson close the entire game after corralling a season-high 20 saves.

Wittenberg held a 44-32 shot advantage and used a 50-46 edge in ground balls.

W&J attempts to snap its seven-game losing streak on Wednesday when traveling to Oberlin for a 4:00 pm contest.
