Wilmington Upends Lady Colonels
WILKES, PA -- Wilmington College scored three straight goals late in the game to pull away from Wilkes University and post a 17-12 non-conference women's lacrosse win at Ralston Field on Saturday. The victory improved the Lady Wildcats to 7-3 overall, while the Lady Colonels saw their record fall to 0-9.
Stacy Fimmano scored off an assist from Jennifer Powell with 5:58 remaining to pull Wilkes within 14-11. However, Wilmington would answer with their three goal run to put the game away. Melissa Samio scored twice during the outburst, while Colby Bugda added a tally to extend the Lady Wildcats lead to 17-11 with 1:47 showing on the clock.
Wilkes held a 33-30 advantage in shots, while Wilmington was able to secure a 19-16 ground balls edge. The Lady Wildcats also gained a 19-12 margin in draw controls.
Bugda had four goals and five assists to lead the Wilmington attack. Katelyn Gibas and Kelly Wojciechowski contributed three goals apiece. Amy Waggoner, had pair of goals and three assists, while Amanda Beasley and Samio finished with two goals each.
Justine Leggio led Wilkes offensively with five goals. Ashley Leggio connected for three goals and two assists. Chelsea Weinstein chipped in with two goals and one assist, while Fimmano tallied a pair of goals.
Wilmington goalkeeper Catie Smith stopped 14 shots to notch the victory in net. Wilkes goalkeeper Carrie Stolarick was credited with eight saves.
The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel Philadelphia University to take on the Lady Rams at 4:00 PM.
