Cazenovia Picks up First Win of the 2007 Season
POULTNEY, VT. – The Cazenovia College Wildcats men's lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the year on Sat., April 14. Playing the Green Mountain College Eagles, in Poultney, Vt., Cazenovia snapped a ten-game losing streak with a 20-4 victory. The Wildcats move to 1-10 on the year with the win. The Eagles, with the loss, move to 1-6 on the season.
Cazenovia took the lead in the first period with goals from Gareth Fabian ('10, Randolph, Vt. / Randolph-Union HS) and Zach Hooker ('09, Glens Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls HS) at the 12:20 mark and 11:45 mark, respectively. Cazenovia would build on its lead in the second quarter with seven goals from five different Wildcats.
Jonathan Rodak ('08, Howell, N.J. / Monsignor Donovan, HS) scored a trio of second-period goals for the Wildcats that helped Cazenovia put the game out of reach. Rodack finished the competition with a game-high seven goals, three assists, a career-high ten points and four groundballs. Rodak now has a team-high 15 goals in 2007.
With the score favoring the Wildcats, 7-2, at the intermission, Cazenovia poured on the offense and added an impressive eleven second-half goals. Defensively, Cazenovia shut down the Eagles with ball control. The Eagles scored just two second-half goals.
The Wildcats' Christopher Lamb ('09, Ottawa, Ont. / Holy Trinity Catholic HS), who had an excellent day in the face-off circle, finished with a game-high 13 groundballs. Lamb also recorded an assist and two shots.
Cazenovia's goalie, Erik Tice ('09, Leeds, N.Y. / Cario-Durham HS), received credit for the win and moved to 1-10 on the year.
Cazenovia's 20-goal performance is season-high mark for the team. Cazenovia's 23--4 victory over Green Mountain on Sat., April 29, 2006, was the last time that the Wildcats scored twenty goals, or more, in a game. The 2006 victory over the Eagles was also Cazenovia's last lacrosse victory.
The win is also the first for Cazenovia's first-year head coach, Ryan Spillett. Spillett, who is the second coach in the history of the Cazenovia program, is a Le Moyne College graduate and a product of the legendary West Genesee High School lacrosse program.
A complete box score of the game is not available because Green Mountain College's Sports Information Department provided incomplete statistics.
Cazenovia plays its final road-game of the season on Wed., April 18. The Wildcats travel to Rochester, N.Y., to take on St. John Fisher College at 4:00 PM.
