No. 13 Wesleyan Pulls Away From No. 19 Colby

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Trailing 4-3 with 9:11 left in the first half, Wesleyan University (7-3, 4-2 NESCAC) scored the final four goals of the period, the first three by junior Sophia Kim, to grab a 7-4 halftime lead over Colby College (5-4, 1-4 NESCAC). Opening with two goals by sophomore Sarah Orkin and first-year Erin McCarthy to extend the lead to 9-4, Wesleyan did not allow Colby to get closer than four goals in the final 20 minutes for a 12-7 victory.

Wesleyan ranked 13th nationally in Division III, defeated Colby, ranked 19th, for only the third time in the 11 meetings between the colleges and for the first time since round-robin play was established in the NESCAC during the 2001 season. Colby had won the previous six NESCAC games and was riding a seven-game win streak over Wesleyan dating back to 1996.

But after junior Lauren Barrett, who led Colby with three goals to improve her seasonal total to a team-high 22, scored at 9:11 of the first half off a centering pass by sophomore Kate Sheriden, Kim took over the game for Wesleyan with three goals in a span of 4:08 to spot Wesleyan a 6-4 advantage. First-year Charlotte Hastings closed out the first-half scoring at 2:42 for the 7-4 cushion. Kim finished the game with four goals and an assist to give her 22 goals and four assists for 26 points as she is tied with sophomore Sarah Orkin for team goal scoring leadership. Senior Cortney Tetrault upped her team-leading point total to 37 (15G-22A) with two goals and two assists for Wesleyan. First-year Erin McCarthy added a hat trick for her most productive day as a Cardinal.

Wesleyan sophomore goalie Rachel Stemerman posted 12 saves while senior Catharine O'Brien had eight stops for Colby in her 40:29 of work and first-year Keryn Meierdiercks added one over the final 19:31.
