Seahawks Cannot Overcome Slow Start vs. Stony Brook
Staten Island, NY – The Seahawks women's lacrosse team fell behind 4-0 in the first four minutes and never recovered in a 15-10 loss to visiting Stony Brook in non-league play at Wagner Stadium today. Sophomore Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA / Jenkintown) matched her career high with four goals in the game for Wagner.
After Stony Brook (11-2) came out firing with four goals in the first four minutes of play, the Seahawks re-grouped and climbed back in the game. Sophomore Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NJ / Westhill) put Wagner (2-11) on the board a little less then five minutes in off an assist from senior Virginia Hernandez (Huntington Station, NY / Walt Whitman), the first of the defender's season. Richmond followed off an assist from sophomore Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Whitemarsh) three minutes later as the Seahawks closed the deficit to 4-2.
Two more goals by the Seawolves extended the lead back to four (6-2) when freshman Teri Noll (Jordan, NY / Jordan-Elbridge) put Wagner back on the board with an unassisted score at 16:15. Amy Hallion responded for Stony Brook with a goal at the 14:38 mark before Gonzalez stripped a Seawolf draw control and went straight to the cage with a goal just 12 seconds later.
Richmond put up consecutive scores for the Seahawks after Kaitlin Leggio answered Gonzalez with one of her four goals on the day. Richmond's second score, which came off a helper from freshman Krista Maylayter (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) left Wagner back down by two (8-6) with 12 minutes to go in the half.
The remainder of the half was taken over by Carlee Buck as she scored twice and assisted on two others to give Stony Brook a 12-6 lead at the half. Buck finished the game with four goals and four assists to lead all players.
Senior Jessica Ellis (Fairport, NY / Fairport) helped lead a second half surge for Wagner, finding the net in the first two minutes off another assist from Blundin. Richmond's season high fourth goal came just two minutes after and the lead was cut to 12-8.
As she did in the first half, Buck again led Stony Brook when she ended the Wagner run with a free position goal at 20:35. Her score brought on two more unanswered scores for the Seawolves, which went up 15-8 before Noll and Blundin scored for Wagner to account for the final margin.
Freshman Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY / Fayetteville-Manlius) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Seahawks making a career best 17 saves and leading the squad with six ground balls. Jen Sandtorv stopped 11 shots for Stony Brook which held a 40-29 edge in shot attempts.
Wagner had a 14-13 edge in draw controls, including four from Maylayter. The Seahawks were 0-6 on free position attempts, while Stony Brook converted on 1 of 3.
The Seahawks are back on the road this weekend as they head to Saint Francis (PA) on Friday and Robert Morris on Sunday.
