Goucher Edges Seahawks, 15-13

St. Mary's City, MD – In a key Capital Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game for both squads, Goucher College came out on top with a 15-13 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) College behind 10 points from junior attacker Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County).

Blatter, the reigning CAC Player of the Week, netted six goals and dished out four assists in helping Goucher (7-6, 4-2 CAC) to secure the fourth seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament which begins on Sunday. St. Mary's will most likely be the No. 5 seed and travel to Goucher for first round action.

The Seahawks (8-7, 4-3 CAC) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but the Goucher responded with two of its own to equalize it at 25:17. The contest stayed tied at 3-3 at 22:26 as the two teams each exchanged a goal. St. Mary's then found the back of the net three straight times to boast a 6-3 lead at 16:37. However, the advantage did not last long as Goucher scored three consecutive goals to tie the game for a third time with 12 minutes left in the half.

Again, the two squads each exchanged a goal for the fourth tie of the game before sophomore midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) notched three of her six goals to put SMCM up 10-7 at 5:13. Goucher pulled within one at 2:55 on a goal by junior midfielder Kate Knitter (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) but Carrier helped the St. Mary's to an 11-9 halftime lead with her fourth goal at 0:57.

Carrier, who would finish the afternoon with six goals and an assist, collected her 100th career goal with her third goal of the day. In just two seasons, she has amassed 103 goals and 20 assists for 123 points.

The Gophers started the second half red-hot as they scored the half's first six goals, including four from Blatter, to boast a 15-11 margin at 13:03. Carrier added her final two scores of the game to place St. Mary's within 15-13 with 10:18 left in the game. But that would be all she wrote as the two teams combined for nine shots with only two being on goal.

Goucher won the draw controls 17-13, out-shot the Seahawks 36-31, and scooped up 25 ground balls to St. Mary's 18. Sophomore midfielder Marlo Tersigni (Leominster, MA/Lawrence Academy) recorded a hat trick for the Gophers, while Knitter and sophomore attacker Sandy Okun (Stevenson, MD/McDonogh) each added two goals. Blatter won five draw controls and Knitter scooped up a game-high eight loose balls.

Carrier paced the Seahawks with seven draw controls and five ground balls, while senior attacker Danielle Miller (Montville, NJ/Montville) netted three goals and handed out an assist.

Senior goalie Janna Kaufman (Atlanta, GA/Walton) made 11 stops in the win, while senior Melissa Puzak (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) had 10 saves for the Seahawks.
