No. 4 Wesleyan Dominates Trinity for 7th Straight Win
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Wesleyan University (12-1, 6-1 NESCAC) extended its winning streak to seven game by scoring the opening six goals of the game en route to a commanding 18-8 decision over Trinity College (7-4, 4-3 NESCAC). Wesleyan is ranked fourth nationally in Division III while Trinity received votes this week in the national poll and was tied for 26th, coming off an 11-10 upset win vs. Middlebury in overtime Saturday.
Junior Grayson Connors, who netted five goals for the Cardinals, got things started just 1:11 into the contest, taking a pass from senior Mike Hines and bouncing one into the net from in front. Sophomore Russ Follansbee, who enjoyed a seven-point game with three goals and four assists, circled from behind the net and deposited a low tuck-in shot for a 2-0 lead at 5:37.
Wesleyan made it 4-0 at the end of the first period and moved ahead by a 9-1 margin late in the second quarter before two Bantam goals in the last 30 seconds narrowed the gap to 9-3 at intermission. Junior Kris Tedeschi, who leads Trinity this season with 26 goals, picked up two of his five tallies in the opening 30 minutes. Senior Curtis Kahn collected two goals and four assists to make it a six-point game in support of the Trinity offense, giving him 23 points on the year (14G, 9A).
Sophomore Jason Ben-Eliyahu had three goals and an assist to improve his team-leading scoring to 29-14-43 for Wesleyan. Follansbee is next with 20-17-37 while Connors, who rounds out the Cardinals' starting attack has 19-6-25. Tops in the midfield is Hines with 15-10-25.
The closest Trinity got in the second half after the Cardinals netted the opening two goals was seven goals, the last at 13-6 with 12:26 to go in the game. Wesleyan rattled off five straight in a seven-minute span for an 18-6 bulge before Trinity ended the scoring with a pair in the final three minutes.
Senior Charlie Congleton made 11 saves for Wesleyan in 51 minutes while yielding six goals. Sophomore Mike Borrero let up the final two goals and made two stops. Sophomore Alex Palma went the distance in the Trinity goal with six saves.
Wesleyan has won the last eight meetings with Trinity, dating back through the 2001 season, and leads in the overall series, 33-18. Wesleyan travels to Middlebury for its next game Saturday while Trinity hosts Williams.
