#12 Yale Blitzes Brown to Stay in Hunt for Tourney Bid

PROVIDENCE, RI - Freshman Kara Kelly (Garden City, NY) held Yale's Lauren Taylor, the nation's leading goal scorer, to just one goal on the afternoon, but Jenn Warden scored a game-high five goals to lead the 12th-ranked Bulldogs to a 13-5 victory over Brown (4-8, 1-3) on Wednesday afternoon at Stevenson Field.

The Bulldogs opened the game with three straight goals, including two from Warden, in the opening 5:54, before junior Mimi DeTolla (Stony Brook, NY) got Brown on the board at 22:37 with her first of two goals. DeTolla's goal sparked a three-goal run for the Bears, as senior Lindsey Glennon (Exeter, NH) scored her third of the season and DeTolla notched her second of the game to tie the contest at 3-3 with 18:10 left in the first half.

Yale then scored three straight goals over the next 4:31 to regain the three-goal cushion, 6-3, with 13:39 remaining. The two teams were then both held off the scoreboard for nearly the rest of the half until Warden's third goal of the game with 1:17 remaining gave Yale a 7-3 lead. Just 16 seconds later, sophomore Callie Lawrence (Denver, CO) notched her second goal of the year to slice Brown's deficit to 7-4 heading into the break.

The Bulldogs solidified their defense in the second half, limiting Brown to just eight total shots, most of which came towards the end of the game. At the other end of the field, Yale never let up, scoring six straight goals, including two each from Warden and Marya Myers during the first 8:17 of the half to open up an 11-4 lead.

Again, both teams were held off the scoreboard for nearly the rest of the way, including Jessica Sturgill scored her second of the game for Yale at 6:43, giving the Bulldogs a 12-4 lead. Linden Ellis notched Yale's 13th of the day 1:32 later at 5:11.

Sophomore Lauren Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY) scored the Bears' final goal of the game with 3:03 left for the 13-5 final, scoring a goal for the seventh straight contest.

Brown junior Melissa King (Pepper Pike, OH) recorded eight saves in net, including six in the second half. The Bears continue action this Saturday, April 21st, when they host #3 Penn in a 1:00 p.m. game.

No. 12 Yale broke open a 3-3 game with four straight goals in the first half, then held Brown scoreless for nearly 27 minutes in the second half to finish off a 13-5 win Wednesday afternoon at Stevenson Field. The win, Yale's eighth in a row, moves the Bulldogs' record to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the Ivy League. Combined with the result of the Penn-Princeton game Wednesday night, it also helped clarify Yale's route to a potential NCAA tournament bid.

The game, Yale's first on natural grass since playing Notre Dame in Wellington, Fla., five weeks earlier, was played in cold, raw conditions and a steady rain that made footing somewhat treacherous. A caused turnover by senior defenseman Lindsay Levin disrupted an early Bears possession and set up Yale's first score a minute in, as junior midfielder Kat Peetz deposited her 26th goal of the year at the other end of the field. Sophomore defenseman Jenn Warden then scored twice within a three-minute span, including one on a free-position shot and one that she bounced past Brown goalkeeper Melissa King.

The Bears' Mimi DeTolla got her team on the board when she scooped up the rebound of a save by junior goalkeeper Ellen Cameron on a free-position shot and shoveled it into the net at 22:37. Goals by Lindsay Glennon and DeTolla then tied the score, and the Bulldogs also saw junior midfielder Lauren Taylor, the country's leading goal scorer, sent to the sideline for three minutes with a yellow card.
