Cazenovia Loses to St. John Fisher, 21-1
PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Cazenovia College men's lacrosse team, coming off its first win of the season against Green Mountain College, faced off against a vastly improving program, the St. John Fisher Cardinals, on Wed., April 18, in Pittsford , N.Y. Meeting their match, the Wildcats were defeated, 21-1, by the Cardinals and fall to 1-11 on the season. St. John Fisher, with the win, improves to 9-3 on the year. Last spring, Fisher enjoyed the program's first winning-season and finished with a 9-8 overall record. The squads win over the Wildcats guarantees a chance at the best record in the history of the program.
Fisher scored its first goal of the game with 8:34 left in the first quarter and scored three more goals over the next 1:25 to take command of the pace of the game.
The Cardinals expanded their lead to 8-0 before Cazenovia managed to score its only goal of the game at the 6:27 mark of the second quarter. Cazenovia's Zach Hooker ('09, Glens Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls HS) netted the Wildcats' only goal of the afternoon, unassisted, and brought the score to 8-1 in favor of the Cardinals.
The Cardinals cruised to an easy 20-goal victory by shutting out the Wildcats in the second half.
Matt Hargather led the Cardinals with four goals and set a new College-record for points in a season with 50 (37 goals-13 assists). Hargather broke the old Fisher mark of 48, which he set in 2006. Additionally, Mike Cortina and Chris Schmidt each tallied three goals and one assist, while Dave Malone and Scott Bowen each tallied five points for Fisher.
The Cardinals' Dave Wood won eleven face-offs and finished with a team-high eight ground balls for the home team. Cazenovia's Christopher Lamb (‘10, Ottawa, Ont. / Holy Trinity Catholic HS) was 6-for-16 in the face-off circle and led the Wildcats with a team-high five groundballs.
Jon Cortina played the first half in goal and made three saves for Fisher, while James Glowina stopped four shots over the final 30 minutes in relief of Cortina. Cazenovia's Erik Tice ('09, Leeds, N.Y. / Cario-Durham HS) played 60 minutes, made ten saves and allowed 21 goals.
Cazenovia was statistically dominated in nearly every facet of the game. As a team, St. John Fisher took 47 shots and recovered 45 groundballs. The Wildcats, in comparison, took just 11 shots and recovered 22 groundballs.
Cazenovia is scheduled to return home to face Alfred University on Sat., April 21. Game time is slated for 5:30 PM, in Liverpool, N.Y., at Liverpool High School.
