Manhattanville Downed at Eastern Connecticut State
MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Valiants ventured out of conference Wednesday night and saw their season-long three-game winning streak snapped at the ECSU Outdoor Athletics Complex where the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors scored eight goals in each half to earn a 16-6 victory over Manhattanville.
Eastern Connecticut's Jenna Faiola scored twice in the first 12 minutes as the Warriors built a 4-0 lead, and after Cory Alcorn (Orangeville, Ontario) scored the get the Valiants on the board ECSU notched four more unanswered goals to build an 8-1 lead.
Katie Bertel (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored late in the first half and again 27 seconds into the second half, but 8-3 was as close as the Valiants would get. Alcorn scored twice more in the second half and Abbe Grimes (Hamden, Conn.) added her team-leading 31st goal late to account for the Manhattanville scoring.
Faiola and Megan Gloster combined for 11 goals to pace the Warriors, who also got two goals and an assist from Lily Anderson. Eastern Connecticut State (9-4) out-shot Manhattanville 40-27 and won all 11 draw controls in the first half.
Freshman Mary Albano (Trumbull, Conn.) made 10 saves but suffered the loss for the Valiants, who lost for the first time since April 4. The loss was, however, Manhattanville's fourth straight on the road since a season-opening win at Western Connecticut State.
The Valiants (5-6, 2-2 Skyline) are back on the road Saturday – and back in the Skyline Conference – facing off with Kean at 12:00 p.m. Manhattanville will play at GoValiants.com Field for the final time in the 2007 regular season Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. against Dominican.
