#12 Cortland Dominates Oswego in SUNYAC Action
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Andrea Venditti (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored five goals and assisted on four others for a career-high nine points as nationally 12th-ranked Cortland defeated Oswego, 20-4, in a SUNYAC matchup Wednesday evening.
Senior Jennifer Willis (Huntington/Walt Whitman) added four goals and two assists and freshman Jessie Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) finished with three goals and three assists for the Red Dragons (8-3, 3-0 SUNYAC), winners of six straight games. Freshman Deanne Abell (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) made six saves.
Senior Ali Bourgal (Sachem) registered three goals and two assists, senior Gina Fazio (Brownville/General Brown) totaled two goals and one assist and junior Beth Elmer (Camillus/West Genesee) scored twice. Fazio became the 29th player in school history to reach the career 100-point mark (56 goals, 44 assists) with her three points.
Four different players – junior Susannah Taylor (Rome/Rome Free Academy), senior Meghan Dooney (Locust Valley), senior Jessica Maltese (Lindenhurst) and junior Alisha Sarubbi (East Greenbush/Columbia) – scored one goal apiece for Oswego (4-6, 1-3). Sophomore Shannon O'Brien (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished with five saves.
Oswego struck first when Taylor scored just 57 seconds into the game. Cortland scored the next seven goals, however, including two each by Elmer and Bourgal, and led 7-1 with 20:37 left in the half. Goals by Maltese and Dooney over the next four minutes drew the Lakers within 7-3, but a Fritz goal at the 13:20 mark and two Venditti goals in the final two minutes gave the Red Dragons a 10-3 halftime lead.
The guests also scored quickly to start the second half as Sarubbi found the net 38 seconds into the period. Cortland blanked the Lakers after that while scoring the final 10 goals. Willis netted three straight scores between the 28:41 mark and the 23:37 mark, with Venditti assisting on two of those tallies.
Fazio scored with 23:15 left and later assisted on a goal with 15 minutes remaining. Fazio's 100th career point came on a goal, assisted by Bourgal, with 14:25 left. Venditti wrapped up the scoring with an unassisted goal with 9:20 on the clock. Venditti's four assists are her career best in addition to her nine points. She recorded eight points in a game twice previously in her Cortland career. Both of those efforts came last season, including an eight-goal game versus Oneonta.
