No. 1 C.W. Post Handles New Haven to Go 11-0
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 19, 2007) - A total of 10 different players scored goals for the top-ranked C.W. Post women's lacrosse team Thursday afternoon at Hickox Field, as the Pioneers clinched at least a share of the East Coast Conference title, scoring the first 13 goals of the game en route to a 15-8 victory over visiting New Haven.
This marks the second year in a row that C.W. Post (11-0, 4-0 ECC) has earned a piece of the conference title; last season, the Pioneers won the NYCAC (now ECC) championship with a 14-13, overtime victory at Adelphi, May 6, in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Senior attack Shannon Fabian (2 g, 3 a) led all players with five points in just one half of play, and opened the scoring 14 seconds in off a pass from junior midfielder Mallory Poole (1 g, 1 a, 2 dc). Goals by senior Colleen Agostinacchio (2 g, 2 a), junior Jenna Miller (3 g, 1 a, 2 dc) and Fabian prompted a New Haven (6-7, 1-2 ECC) 4:16 into the game, before tallies by sophomore Jaclyn Napoli (2 g, 1 a, 2 ct), Lauren LoMonaco (1 g, 2 a), freshman Staci Passafiume (1 g, 1 a, 3 gb) and junior Elaine Williams doubled the Pioneers' lead to 8-0 with 22:41 left in the first half. The lead grew to 13-0 with 7:31 left in the half, before the Chargers' Brigid Brady scored the first of her three goals on the afternoon with 2:54 remaining to make the halftime score 13-1.
C.W. Post only took two shots in the entire second half, but both of them went in, as Poole (23:55) converted a pass from Kelli Fundus and freshman Brianne Jackolski finished off a feed from Passafiume with 17:57 to go, giving the hosts a 15-1 advantage. Every player that dressed for the Pioneers took the field, as they cruised to their 27th consecutive regular-season victory against Division II competition. Both Brady and Sarah LeGoff (4 dc) completed their hat tricks later in the half, as UNH scored the final seven goals of the contest.
The Pioneers held a 26-22 edge in shots on the afternoon, including a 24-6 margin in the opening 30 minutes of play. The ground balls (CWP, 13-11) and draw controls (UNH, 13-12) were virtually even, as well.
Sophomore Katie Hogan (game-high 4 dc) scored one goal for C.W. Post, while senior Ashlyn Giulianelli dished out her first assist of the season. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Scipione made nine saves on the 12 shots on goal that she saw in 49:43 of action, while sophomore Ann Denning turned aside two New Haven shots.
Brianna Kenworthy (2 gb, 1 dc) and Kristine Lambracht (1 dc) each scored a goal in the final two minutes of play for the Chargers, while Traci Cornwell led all players with four ground balls. Goalkeeper Alison Wagner made all seven of her saves in the first half for New Haven.
Head coach Karen MacCrate Henning's Pioneers are back in action at Hickox Field Sunday afternoon (April 22), as they play host to Merrimack at noon.
