#9 James Madison Doubles up ODU to Improve to 11-2
HARRISONBURG, Va., April 19, 2007 -- James Madison seniors scored their team's first five goals to lead the number 6/9 (Inside Lacrosse, IWLCA) Dukes to a 14-7 win over Old Dominion in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse Thursday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Field.
The Dukes, who honored their senior class in pre-game ceremonies, increased their record to 11-2 and remained unbeaten in the CAA at 4-0. JMU won its fifth-straight game. The Monarchs fell to 5-7 (2-3 CAA) with the loss.
JMU Senior Kelly Berger (Columbia, Md./Hammond) opened the game at 23:40 by sprinting halfway down the field to drive a score into the back of the net. Seniors Lynlea Cronin (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and Maria Bosica (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) each added a goal to make the score 3-0 with 19:38 to play in the first half.
ODU responded just 31 seconds later with a score by sophomore Jessica Noone (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) to put the Monarchs on the board.
Berger and Cronin then scored their second goals of the game at 18:50 and 16:06, respectively, to increase the Dukes' lead to 5-1.
After another ODU goal, JMU junior Annie Wagner (Annapolis, Md./St. Paul's) scored twice in less than one minute. The second goal was made when Wagner evaded four defenders and twisted around another to push the Dukes' lead to 7-2 with 8:18 left in the first half.
The Monarchs closed the half with a goal by Noone at 2:33 and opened the second half with another goal just 1:55 into the period, trimming the JMU lead to 7-4.
Cronin and Wagner responded with back-to-back scores over the next eight minutes to increase the Dukes' lead to 9-4 with 20:21 left to play.
The Monarchs then scored back-to-back goals of their own, including a free-position goal by junior Kelly Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton), to make the score 9-6 at 18:59.
Berger, Bosica, Wagner and junior Natasha Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) then scored five of the final six goals of the game, including a quick shot by Fuchs from the right side of the net with 1:22 left on the clock.
JMU was out-shot 28-23, but junior goalkeeper Kelly Wetzel (Catonsville, Md./Mount De Sales) made 14 saves. The Dukes scored on seven of their first eight shots of the game.
ODU junior goalkeeper Sara Larson (Sylvan Lake, Mich./Mercy) recorded four saves.
Berger and Wagner led JMU with a game-high four goals each. Cronin had three scores, Bosica finished with two, and Fuchs added one goal. Fuchs also recorded a game-high three assists with Berger contributing one.
ODU was led by Noone with two goals.
The Dukes' next game is Sunday, April 22, at William and Mary.
