Career Day by Ellis Leads Wagner Past Saint Francis

Loretto, PA -- Wagner senior Jessica Ellis Jessica Ellis (Fairport, NY / Fairport) totaled a career best seven points to lead the Seahawks women?s lacrosse team past host Saint Francis (PA) 18-5 in a Northeast Conference contest this evening. The win stops a five game losing streak for Wagner which improves to 2-4 in the NEC and 3-11 overall. Ellis led everyone with game highs of four goals and three assists as the Seahawks posted their first road win of the year.

The scoring came early and often for Wagner as sophomore Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NJ / Westhill) wasted little time in putting the Seahawks ahead 1-0 with an unassisted goal 44 seconds into the game. Shannon Scarola, who scored twice for the Red Flash, tied the score one minute later before freshman Teri Noll (Jordan, NY / Jordan-Elbridge) found the net at 25:31 and again at 20:44. After the second goal from Noll, just 10 seconds ticked off the clock when Ellis scored her first goal of the day off an assist from sophomore Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Whitemarsh) to give Wagner a 4-1 lead.

A Saint Francis (0-12; 0-8 NEC) score cut the lead back down to three, but three more Seahawk goals, including two from freshman Janine Bright (Commack, NY / Commack) gave Wagner a 7-1 advantage with a little more than 11 minutes left in the half. The scoreboard remained quite until the 4:48 mark when Brittany Bullion scored for the Red Flash setting up another onslaught from the Seahawks.

A 10-0 Wagner run started at 1:11 in the first half with a Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA / Jenkintown) goal and carried through the second half when freshman Krista Maylayter (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) scored unassisted with 7:18 left in the game. Ellis recorded three goals and added two more assists during the decisive run, while sophomore Lindsay Hashmall (Wantagh, NY / Wantagh), who had a game high six ground balls, and senior Jenelle Spatarella (Rocky Point, NY / Rocky Point) chipped in goals to help fuel the victory.

Scarola ended the stretch and put the Red Flash back on the board at 5:20 before a free position goal by Gonzalez and a late Saint Francis tally closed out the game.

Noll and Richmond each had a hat trick with three goals as Blundin and Gonzalez (seven draw controls) helped with two assists each.

The 44 shots taken were a season high for the Seahawks which won 17 of 28 draw controls. Wagner was successful on 2of 7 in free position shots.

Freshman Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY / Fayetteville-Manlius) made seen saves in 42 minutes of play before giving way to sophomore Amy Jones (Jarrettsville, MD / N. Harford) who posted four saves in her 18 minutes.

The Seahawks end the two game road swing at Robert Morris on Sunday.
