Washington & Jefferson Falls to Denison
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Topher Nazaruk totaled seven points with three goals and four assists to help Denison defeat Washington & Jefferson, 15-8, in men's lacrosse action on Friday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
The Presidents (2-10) held the lead three times in the first quarter, but Nazaruk and Chris Chandler netted goals in the final 2:34 of the period to give the Big Red (9-2) a 5-4 edge after 15 minutes of play.
Denison fired in the first four goals of the second quarter to up its lead to 9-4; however, the Presidents closed to within 9-6 at halftime after sophomore attacker Kyle Worthley (Marietta, Ga./Harrison) dropped in a pair of goals late in the first half.
Worthley's goal at the 3:14 mark of the third quarter brought W&J to within 11-7, but the Big Red tacked on the next four goals to run away with the victory.
Brady Burton added five goals and one assist for Denison, while Chandler and Dan Maude netted two goals. Daniel Wallace totaled seven saves in 39 minutes for the Big Red.
Denison held a 35-29 shot advantage, but the Presidents used a 47-35 edge in ground balls. W&J also claimed 17-of-26 faceoffs.
Worthley led the Presidents with a career-high five goals. Junior midfielder Russ Kalkstein (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) posted two goals and one assist and classmate Justin Beckman (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) added the other W&J goal. Sophomore midfielder Sean Jasionowski (Bear, Del./Pennington) dished out three assists. Junior goalie Andrew Reid (Franklin, Tenn./University School of Nashville) made 10 stops in the loss.
Washington & Jefferson plays its final road game of the season on Wednesday at Kenyon (4:30 pm).
