Hammell Scores Four Goals at #9 Pace Tops Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. - Freshman James Hammell (North Caldwell, N.J.) scored four goals, including the game-winner, for the Setters to lead Pace to a 9-7 win over the Bentley men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Pace Field. The Setters, ranked ninth in the nation in the latest USILA Division II poll, improved to 7-4 (4-4 NE-10), while the Falcons fell to 3-7 (2-5 NE-10).

Freshman Stephen Moulton (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS) put Bentley on the board first with his first collegiate goal midway through the first quarter, but Pace struck back when Hammell scored his first goal of the game on the Setters' first man-up opportunity.

Each side traded goals through the second quarter when sophomores Andy Curtis (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford HS) and Chris Woods (Duxbury, Mass./Sandwich HS) scored for the Falcons, but were quickly matched by senior Robert Cornetta (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Hammell to keep the score even through halftime.

The Setters took the lead and never relinquished it in the third quarter with goals three minutes apart from sophomore Jake Sheppard (Melbourne, Australia) and Cornetta to put Pace up by two with a quarter left to play.

Woods scored his second of the game early in the final quarter, but was quickly matched by Hammell. Freshman Kevin Gould (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) scored a hat trick for the Falcons in the fourth quarter, but the Setters were able to hold off the Bentley attack as Hammell scored the eventual game-winner with 9:23 to go.

Freshman Andy Collette (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley HS) had a strong outing in defeat, making 12 saves while allowing only nine goals. Sophomore Timothy Matheis (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) earned the win for the Setters, stopping 14 shots and giving up seven goals.

The Falcons return home on Wednesday to host Southern New Hampshire in the regular season home finale at 7:00 p.m. Bentley's seniors will be honored before their final home game.
