Franklin Pierce Edges Assumption, 13-11
RINDGE, N.H. (April 21, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce women's lacrosse team earned its second victory of the season with a 13-11 decision over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at Sodexho Field.
Sophomore Carla Savini (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) led the Franklin Pierce attack with a game-high six goals for six points, while junior Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) tallied three points on one goal and two assists. Junior Celine Stamets (Sausalito, Calif./Mavin Catholic) was also solid with two goals and one assist, while senior captain Nicole McKinnon (Northfield, N.H./Winnisquam) added two scores.
Junior Jenna Goldstein (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and sophomore Shannon Howard (Norfolk, Va./King Philip) led the Assumption offense with two goals and one assist each. Senior Kristen Ford (Worcester, Mass./Saint Mark's) and junior Katie Cappiello (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) were also solid for the Greyhounds, chipping in with two goals apiece.
In the first half, action was evenly matched as both teams traded goals until Assumption took a 7-6 advantage into the second half. Franklin Pierce opened the scoring 2:47 into the match on Savini's first score of the game, but Assumption evened the score just 0:21 later on a goal by Goldstein. Savini led the Ravens with four goals scored in the half, while Goldstein registered a goal and one assist for the Greyhounds.
In the second half, Assumption jumped out to an 8-6 lead as Howard registered her second score of the game just 0:50 into the frame. Franklin Pierce countered with two unanswered goals by McKinnon and Savini at the 25:42 mark to knot the score at
8-8.
Later in the second half, Assumption took a slight 10-9 lead with goals by Goldstein and Ford, but Franklin Pierce rallied off four unanswered goals to take a 13-10 advantage and preserve its second victory of the season. Stamets led the Raven scoring surge with two goals scored, while Giardina and McKinnon chipped in with one score apiece.
Both teams registered 33 shots in the contest. Senior goaltender Erin Hopkins (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) collected 17 saves for Franklin Pierce, while sophomore goaltender Nicole Johnson (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) stopped 15 shots for Assumption.
Franklin Pierce (2-12, 1-7 NE-10) will be in action again on Tuesday as it hosts Bentley College at 6:00 p.m. Assumption (0-12, 0-8 NE-10) will travel to Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
