4th-Quarter Rally Leads McDaniel over Haverford
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Jared Nutter (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) netted two of his game-high four goals in the fourth quarter to key a late rally and lead McDaniel to an 11-9 win over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Matt Buschman (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) added a hat trick for the Green Terror (7-5, 2-4 CC), who trailed 9-7 after three quarters of play before tallying the game's final four goals to relegate the Fords (7-5, 4-3 CC) to no better than a fourth-place finish in the conference with one game to play. Max Tcheyan led Haverford with three goals.
Trailing 7-5 at the break, Matt Thorne-Fitzgerald pulled the Fords within 7-6 nearly five minutes after the break. With 3:49 to play in the period, Adam Goldstein knotted the game before Shane Hafer gave Haverford the lead 30 seconds later.
Dean Granoff gave the visitors a two-goal advantage entering the final quarter. Steve Hoffman (Latham, NY/LaSalle) tallied off a Bill Warner (Yardley, PA/LaSalle) feed nearly five minutes into the period before Nutter knotted the game at 9-all with 8:48 to play.
Buschman broke the deadlock, finishing a Hoffman assist with 5:37 to play before Nutter added an insurance goal at the 1:53 mark. Chris Edmonds (Laurel, MD/Pallotti) and Nutter finished solo runs in the first 5:07 of the game to stake McDaniel to an early 2-0 lead. Tcheyan cut the deficit in half just 27 seconds later before Buschman made it a 3-1 first quarter 24 seconds after the Tcheyan marker.
The teams traded goals over the first half of the second period before Buschman and Edmonds stretched the lead to 7-4 with 3:43 to play in the first half. Tcheyan made it a two-goal game at the intermission with an unassisted tally.
The Green Terror returns to action at Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
