Canisius Downs Iona in Season Finale

Eight different Golden Griffins tallied goal as the Canisius College women's lacrosse team closed its 2007 season with an 18-15 victory over the Iona Gaels Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Lauren Walsh (Auburn, N.Y.) led Canisius (5-11, 2-5 MAAC) by tying her career high with seven points while Ashley Gray (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) matched her season high with six points. Brittany Farrugia (Elbridge, N.Y.) and Marissa Brown (Syracuse, N.Y.) each had three goals for the Blue and Gold.

The teams stayed close throughout the majority of the first half with the score tied at 5-5 on a goal by Rachel O'Leary from Iona (7-7, 2-5). Canisius then scored eight of the next 10 goals to take a 13-7 lead with 17:58 remaining in the contest.

The Gaels closed the gap to 13-11 at 10:45 on Christie Godlewski's fifth goal of the game. Canisius put the game away by scoring four of the next five goals.

In net, Erica Nasca (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made nine saves in her second start for the Griffs.

"We had a great team effort today, getting contributions from a number of players," Canisius coach Scott Teeter said. "It's great to send our seniors out with a victory in their last home game."

Game Notes: The 18 goals were a season high and were the most goals scored by Canisius since it had 20 at Iona April 1, 2006… Walsh took over the career points lead in the record books and now has 136 through three years… The Griffs controlled draw controls 25-10… The second half featured 21 goals after 12 in the first half… The three goals by Farrugia tied her career high, which came April 13, 2005, against Gannon… Walsh had 12 points in the last two games of the season.
