Oneonta Falls to Geneseo in Overtime

Sophomore Maggie Morris (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) broke a 13-13 tie with 1:27 remaining in overtime to help lift the visiting Geneseo Blue Knights to a 15-14 win against Oneonta State in a key SUNYAC women's lacrosse game today. Senior Maggie Benham (Canadaigua, NY/Canadaigua) added an insurance goal less than one minute later as the Blue Knights raised their overall record to 10-2 and 4-1 in the SUNYAC. The loss for Oneonta, which had its three-game conference winning streak snapped, puts them at 8-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Geneseo was trailing 13-12 in the waning minutes of regulation before senior Emily Ward (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) scored the game-tying goal with 40 seconds remaining.

Benham and Ward both finished the game with five goals each while Benham added an assist for a total of six points on the day.

The game was tied at 1-1 through the first five minutes of play when Geneseo took control with five unanswered goals to take a commanding 6-1 lead in the 11th minute of play.

Benham and Ward led the charge with two goals each.

Oneonta then stormed back with six unanswered goals of its own to take a 7-6 lead with just under nine minutes to play in the first half.

Freshman Lauren Portnoy (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) scored three of her four goals in the game during that stretch.

Geneseo out-scored Oneonta 3-2 over the final seven minutes including another pair of goals by Ward to go into the break at 9-9.

Junior Kristin O'Leary (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) got things going for the hosts in the second half with her only goal of the game.

After Geneseo tied the game at 10-10, Oneonta scored back-to-back goals for its biggest lead of the game of two goals. Geneseo would tie the game once again on goals by Morris and Benham before senior Erin Maybeck (Huntington, NY/Huntington) gave Oneonta its last lead at 13-12 with less than five minutes to go.

Oneonta will be in action again this Saturday against Brockport in the home finale of 2007. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at All College Field.
