McDaniel Edges Ursinus in Centennial Playoffs
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Chelsea Feruzzi netted a hat trick and Meagan Mattson recorded three points with one goal and two assists to lead McDaniel past Ursinus 12-8 in the first round of the Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse playoffs on Wednesday.
The Green Terror (12-4) scored four answered goals in the first half to break a 1-all tie for a 5-1 lead that would not relinquish to advance to the CC semifinals this weekend at Franklin & Marshall. McDaniel will face the Diplomats on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Lisa Clark (Media, PA/Penncrest) and Elizabeth Cannon (Garrison, NY/James I. O'Neil) each tallied two goals, while Allyson Shicora (Media, PA/Strath Haven) made 12 saves to reach the 500 mark for her career, ending with 215 for the season.
The Bears (10-7) got within one goal midway through the second half, but could not pull the come-from-behind victory against the Green Terror for the second time this season.
Erinn Hopkins scored quick goal to start the first half, putting McDaniel up 1-0 with just 56 seconds into the game.
Stephanie Kaysen (Media, PA/Penncrest) connected with Jenna Werley (Springfield, PA/Springfield) to even the score, before McDaniel recorded four straight goals by four different players for a 5-1 lead.
Cannon finished a solo run with 4:04 left in the half and Logan Conklin (Yardley, PA/George School) converted her free-position shot two minutes later to cut the lead to 5-3 at intermission.
Michelle Mullen and Connie Wuenschel were able to push the lead back to four goals with the first two of the second half.
The Bears kept fighting back and tallied the next goals thanks to Leah Kramer (Bishopville, MD/Stephen Decatur) and Clark to make it 7-5.
The Green Terror sandwiched two goals around Clark's second goal of the afternoon, but Kaitlin Glenn (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) scored an unassisted tally and Cannon made her 8m shot within a minute of each other to put Ursinus one goal away from tying the game.
McDaniel recorded three goals in the final 17 minutes to clear the path to the semifinals.
Goalie Sarah White made nine saves in the win for the Green Terror, who held a 29-21 shot advantage.
