Patriot League Players and Coach of the Year
Center Valley, Pa. - Colgate took home two of the 2007 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Major Awards, while Army, Bucknell and Navy each garnered one. Colgate's Brandon Corp was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate Colin Hulme took home Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honors. Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year honors went to Army's Adam Fullerton, while Bucknell's Austin Winter was tabbed Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Navy's Richie Meade was voted the 2007 Patriot League Coach of the Year.
Corp was tied for second in the Patriot League with 26 goals, 11 of which came in Patriot League competition. The sophomore attack averages two goals per outing, which ties him for 25th in the nation. The two-time All-Patriot League selection racked up 38 points, adding 12 assists to his 26 goals. In 2007, he recorded six games with three or more goals and netted four goals on two occasions. Corp is just the second student-athlete from Colgate to be named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year with the other being Derek Laub in 1993.
The Colgate defense, which Hulme anchors, is ranked 16th on the NCAA leader board in scoring defense (7.92) and have allowed just 46 goals in Patriot League play. The senior defenseman is fourth in the Patriot League with 42 ground balls. Hulme has twice been honored as an All-Patriot League selection and is the first Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year from Colgate in Patriot League history.
The Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year award was first awarded in 2005 and Fullerton is the first to take home the honor for Army. The junior netminder is third in the nation in save percentage (.636) and seventh in goals against average (6.63). He started all 12 games for the Black Knights, who were nationally ranked as high as eighth during the mid-way point of the season. Eight times this year, Fullerton recorded double-digit saves and notched a season-high 18 against Holy Cross on Feb. 27.
Winter, who was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week three times this season, paced the Patriot League in both points (46) and assists (28). Those totals rank him 23rd and tied for fifth, respectively, in the nation. The freshman attack was one of three Patriot League student-athletes to recorded seven points (four goals/three assists) in a single game this season, doing so on March 31 versus Holy Cross. This year he posted seven games with three assists and had six multi-goal outings. Bucknell has laid claim to the Patriot League Rookie of the Year the last two seasons, with Joe Mele winning a year ago, and have taken home five rookie awards overall. Other Bucknell winners of the Patriot League Rookie of the Year award were Ed Joffe (1996), Wes Fetchet (2001) and Chris Cara (2002).
Since joining the Patriot League in 2004 in the sport of men's lacrosse, Navy mentor - Meade - has been named Patriot League Coach of the Year twice (2004, 2007). Meade led the Mids to a 9-3 overall mark and their second perfect Patriot League season at 6-0. The Mids are the top seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament and are ranked 10th in the national coaches poll. Meade's squad ranks first in the Patriot League in goals per game (10.83), ground balls per game (36.00), shots per game (37.5) and shots on goal per game (22.08), while ranking in the top three in 13 other statistical categories.
The 2007 Patriot League Tournament will take place on Friday, April 27 with semifinal action and on Sunday, April 29 with the championship game. Navy will host the event as the top seed and face No. 4 Army at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, while No. 2 Colgate and No.3 Bucknell will battle at 7:00 p.m. The winners of Friday's semifinal matches will advance to the championship tilt on Sunday, which will be aired on CSTV at noon.
