Typadis Nets Five as UMass Defeats St. Joe's, 9-5

AMHERST, Mass. - Led by five goals from junior attack Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.), the UMass women's lacrosse team used a dominant first half to take a 9-5 win over visiting Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium. With five goals today, Typadis needs just five more to set the school's single-season goals scored record which has stood for the last 23 years. The Minutewomen led 7-1 at intermission against the league's second-best defensive unit. UMass will host La Salle on Sunday at McGuirk in the season finale. Prior to the game, UMass will honor its 2007 senior class of Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.), Samantha Sepulveda (Freeport, N.Y.), and Erica Shapiro (Norfolk, Mass.).

The draw control circle proved a huge factor for UMass in the game. The Minutewomen (7-9, 2-4 A-10) held a 13-to-3 advantage over the Hawks for the game. Despite outscoring UMass 4-2 in the second half, Saint Joseph's was unable to control any draws converting its scoring opportunities of 14 UMass second half turnovers.

UMass jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the first 20 minutes of the game with three goals from Typadis and goals from junior Kristina Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.), Sepulveda, and sophomore Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.).

Christina Colangelo put the Hawks (6-9, 1-5 A-10) on the board with a free position goal with 9:55 remaining in the half before Typadis answered with her fourth of the day just before the period's end.

In the second half, each team traded goals before junior Melynda Zwick (Holland, Pa.) found Drown for her second goal of the day and 30th of the season giving the Minutewomen a 9-2 lead.

In the final 11 minutes of play, however, it was all Saint Joseph's who rattled off three unanswered goals thanks to Jenna Martino's natural hat trick to give the final 9-5 score.

UMass dominated the first half of play outshooting SJU 17-to-3. The Hawks turned the tables in the second half outshooting UMass 18-to-8, but finding the net just four times.

Typadis led all scorers with five goals on six shots. She now has 47 goals this season which is tied with Marjorie Anderson (1981) and Tracey Drown (2004) for the second most in one season. With five on Sunday against La Salle, she could set the new goals scored record for a single season which is currently held by Pam Moryl (1984) who tallied 51. In her two previous games against La Salle she has a total of 10 goals.

The five goals also move her into second all-time in career goals (126) pushing her past Sue Murphy who is the current Richmond head coach.

She also continues 40 game streak with at least one goal which is the third longest such streak in the nation among active players.

McCarthy made eight saves in net for UMass playing 52 minutes, 36 seconds and allowing three goals. Sophomore Jamie-Lee Whiteway finished the game playing 7 minutes, 24 seconds. Saint Joseph's keeper Suzy Herlihy, who ranks No. 1 in the league in saves and No. 2 in goals against and save percentage, allowed nine goals while making seven saves for the game.
