Roanoke Tops Randolph-Macon ito Reach ODAC Final

LEXINGTON, VA--Behind a 15-save performance from goalie Katlyn Scarlett, the Roanoke College women's lacrosse team advanced to the 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game with a 9-8 win over Randolph-Macon. The Maroons improve to 14-2 with the win on Saturday, which came in Lexington, VA. Roanoke will play Washington & Lee University on Sunday at 2:00 pm in the title game.

With the game tied at eight late in the contest, Scarlett made two points-blank saves on Randolph-Macon's Traci Phipps. On the ensuing Roanoke possession, sophomore Kayla Moore dodged through three Yellow Jacket defenders and with just 38 seconds left scored the game-winning goal.

Moore's goal prevented a second-half RMC comeback. The Maroons led 6-3 at halftime and went up 7-3 early in the second half on a Paige Mason goal on a curl through the middle and finish of a Chelsea Rankin pass. The Yellow Jackets, however, scored the next four goals and with 19:13 left in the game tied the score at seven.

The Maroons recaptured the lead with 16:03 left when freshman Brooks Laufman scored on a high shot. The Yellow Jackets got an unassisted goal from Kelly Cramer with 10:15 left to set up the late game heroics from Scarlett and Moore.

The Maroons got three goal from junior Amanda Hutchins, all in the first half, two goals and an assist from Rankin and two goals from Moore. Mason, Rachel Hutchinson, and Katharine DiNinno all forced two RMC turnovers.

LEXINGTON, Va. * Roanoke sophomore defender Kayla Moore (Ithaca, N.Y./Millbrook) registered the game-winning goal with 37.9 seconds remaining in the contest to lift the third-seeded Maroons over second-seeded Randolph-Macon, 9-8, in the semifinals of the 2007 ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

Roanoke (14-2) opened the scoring in the first stanza with an unassisted tally from junior attacker Amanda Hutchins (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) at 25:19, but R-MC's senior midfielder Traci Phipps (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) evened the score by making good on a free position shot just 1:09 later. The Maroons then reeled off three-straight goals, including another score from Hutchins to take a 4-1 lead with 13:15 left in the initial period. The Yellow Jackets would cut the RC lead to 4-3 off unassisted goals from freshman midfielder Kelly Cramer (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and senior midfielder Lizzy Spero (Phoenix, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), but the Maroons closed out the half with two unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead into the break.

RC scored the first goal of the second half to take a 7-3 lead with 28:05 to play, but Randolph-Macon (10-5) mounted a comeback, scoring the next four goals to tie the game at 7-7 with 19:13 left. Freshman midfielder Brooks Laufman (Annapolis, Md./Severn) gave the Maroons a 8-7 lead at the 16:03 mark, but Cramer found the back of the net with 10:15 left to tie the contest once again (8-8) and set-up Moore's game-winner.

Hutchins led Roanoke with three goals, while senior midfielder Chelsea Rankin (Columbus, Ohio/ Thomas Worthington) registered two goals and one assist. Moore added a pair of goals and Laufman posted one goal and one helper. Sophomore goalkeeper Katlyn Scarlett played the entire contest and racked up 15 saves, including several point-blank stops in the finals minutes.

Randolph-Macon was paced by Cramer's three goals and one assist and Spero, who recorded two scores. Phipps contributed one and one assist and senior goalkeeper Lindsay Schabert (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) saw the entire game between the pipes, stopping 13 shots.

Roanoke will take on Washington and Lee in the finals of the 2007 ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday at 3:00 pm at Watt Field.
