Yingling Keys McDaniel's Victory at No. 18 Dickinson
CARLISLE, Pa. -- Ben Yingling (Westminster, MD/Loyola Blakefield) closed his collegiate career with a career-high 19 saves to lead McDaniel to a 10-9 victory at No. 18 Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday. Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, MD/McDonough) the offense for the Green Terror (8-6, 3-5 CC) with a game-high five points on two goals and three assists. Nine different players had a hand in the nine goals for the Red Devils (9-5, 5-3 CC), who are the No. 2 seed for next weekend's CC tournament at Gettysburg.
After a back-and-forth battle for the first three quarters, it was a fourth-quarter man-up goal that proved the difference. Knotted for the seventh time after Derek Still scored with 6:51 to play, Dickinson was called for a pushing penalty just 10 seconds later. Eighteen seconds into the extra-man opportunity, Preston found Bill Warner (Yardley) and Yingling made five stops over the waning minutes to secure the game-winner for Warner.
The teams traded goals through the first 30 minutes and entered the break tied at 4-all. Drew Peace found the back of the cage with 12:20 remaining in the third period to give the Red Devils a 5-4 advantage. Back-to-back markers from Chris Edmonds (Laurel, MD/Pallotti) re-established a one-goal advantage for McDaniel with 4:52 to play in the quarter. Ed Lawless scored just 27 seconds later to knot the game at 6-all before Chris Dodson and Scott Dalgliesh tallied 17 seconds apart to give the hosts an 8-6 lead. With just 22 seconds remaining in the period, Preston scored his second goal of the day to pull the Green Terror within 8-7.
Warner knotted the game early in the fourth quarter before Edmonds completed his hat trick with 6:59 to play to give McDaniel a one-goal edge. Dickinson held a distinct advantage in every offensive category, including outshooting the visitors, 43-25. The Red Devils also held a 36-20 edge in ground balls and won 19 of 23 face-offs.
