Typadis Sets Single-Season Goals Record in UMass' Win
AMHERST, Mass. - It was an emotional day at McGuirk Stadium on Sunday as UMass sent its 2007 senior class out on a high note with a 19-8 win over Atlantic 10 rival La Salle. Junior attack Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) scored five goals for the second straight game to give her 52 for the season which eclipsed the 23-year standing previous record of 51 scored by Pam Moryl in the 1984 season.
Prior to the game, UMass honored seniors Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.), Samantha Sepulveda (Freeport, N.Y.) and Erica Shapiro (Norfolk, Mass.). McCarthy earned the win in goal with 10 saves and allowed just five goals, Sepulveda finished with two goals and an assist, and Shapiro picked up three groundballs and caused two turnovers.
The season finale saw 10 different players record at least a point as the Minutewomen finish the year at 8-9 overall and 3-4 in the Atlantic 10. The eight wins this season is the most since the 2003 team finished the year 11-8 overall.

UMass rattled off the first five goals of the game including Typadis' first of the day halfway through the frame. She finished the first half with two goals as the Minutewomen broke open a 10-2 lead at intermission.
To start the second half, La Salle (4-11, 0-7 A-10) gained some momentum as Tiffany Grossi set up back-to-back goals by Jill Davis in the first two minutes.
Sophomore Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.) responded with two of her own to push the lead back to 10 making the score 12-4.
With 12:41 to go, Typadis tied Moryl's record with an unassisted score before breaking the record 49 seconds later. Typadis won the draw control and then raced to cage for the record making the score 16-5 with 11:52 to play.
The Explorers scored the next three goals before Sepulveda and freshman Kaitlyn Johnson (Meriden, N.H.) each tallied goals to give the final score.
Along with Typadis, Drown finished the day with five goals of her own giving her 35 for the season. Junior Melynda Zwick (Holland, Pa.) scored two goals and added three assists and junior Kristina Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored a goal and also notched three assists. Twichell finishes the season with a team-leading 20 assists with is the ninth-best single season total in UMass history.
Davis finished with three goals and Grossi scored twice to lead La Salle offensively. Brittany Friedrich made 11 saves in the loss.
UMass outshot La Salle 33-to-21 and dominated the draw control circle 21-to-8.
Typadis finishes the 2007 season with 52 goals and eight assists. She now ranks second all-time at UMass with 131 career goals needing 40 to set the career record. She also ranks sixth all-time with 147 career points needing 73 to break that career record. Her five goals today marked the third time she has scored that many against La Salle and extends her scoring streak to 41 straight games.
McCarthy made 10 saves in goal giving her 447 for her career which stands as the second-best in school history. She finished the year with a 9.24 goals against average which is the best in her four seasons.
The Minutewomen will return 91 percent of its scoring for the 2008 season along with its entire defensive unit minus McCarthy in cage. UMass will also have sophomore Kaytlin McCormick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) back in the lineup after she redshirted the 2007 season. McCormick netted 31 goals and four assists in 2006 as a freshman.
