Top-Ranked Mercyhurst Rolls Past Dominican
Erie, Pa. – There was no letdown by the Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team Sunday. A day after winning a highly touted match-up against No. 2 New York Tech, the Lakers outscored East Coast Conference foe Dominican 14-1 in the first half and cruised to a 17-7 victory at Tullio Field. The victory clinched at least a share of the ECC Championship for the Lakers and puts them in position to win the outright title Saturday at Adelphi.
Mercyhurst left little doubt about the outcome of this contest, scoring nine times in the first period and shutting out Dominican 5-0 in the second. The Lakers outshot the Chargers 36-15 over the course of the first three periods and held a 40-27 edge in ground balls. As well, the Lakers forced 10 more turnovers than they committed.
David Osier scored twice and handed out five assists, adding to his team-high total of 27 entering the contest. Osier scored the first goal of the game before Dominican tied the score at 1-1 with 9:59 to play in the first period, but from that point on, it was all Lakers.
Mercyhurst scored the next 13 goals of the game and went into the half with a 14-1 lead. The two teams split four third-period goals before Dominican outscored Mercyhurst 4-1 in the fourth.
Bryon Lindner, Mike Thon and Scott Janssen had three goals apiece, while Osier and Adam Mulherin had two apiece. Four other players scored one goal.
In goal, Jason Lashomb made three saves over the first 38:42, allowing two goals. Chris Davis had a save in 13:58 and Matt Campanelli added four saves over the final 7:20 of action.
Dowling falls to 5-8 on the year and 0-6 in ECC play. Mercyhurst improves to 11-1 and 5-0 in conference and will finish the regular season at Adelphi Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
