Scranton Falls to Lycoming in MAC Tournament

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—The University of Scranton did not have an answer for Lycoming College sophomore midfielder Sarah Wingerden (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) in the quarterfinals of the Middle Atlantic Conference tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Wingerden scored a game-high nine goals and added three assists to lead the Warriors to a 25-13 victory and move them into Thursday's semifinal game against #2-seeded Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. The Warriors, now 14-3 overall, also received six goals from junior attacker Megan Wallenhorst (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit), four from freshman attacker Megan McIntyre (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) and two each from freshman midfielder Justine Titko (Wrightstown, N.J./Northern Burlington) and sophomore midfielder Kelly Mack (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt).

Senior midfielder Jackie Messantonio (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) concluded her outstanding career for Scranton by scoring five goals to bring her four-year total to 217, the second highest total in Scranton history. She also finished her career with 246 total points, which is fourth on the Royals' all-time list.

Scranton, which put the wraps on a 6-9 season, also received three goals from freshman attacker Kristen Marquino (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and sophomore Diana Rocklein (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and one each from junior attacker Kaitlyn Mimnaugh (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and freshman midfielder Heather Melone (Wall, N.J./Wall Township).

Wingerden and Wallenhorst combined for eight first-half goals as the Warriors jumped out to a 14-5 lead and seemed to have the game well in hand. Behind two goals apiece by Messantonio and Marquino, the Royals closed the gap by scoring the first five goals of the second-half during a seven-minute span to cut Lycoming's lead to 14-10. Wallenhorst then sparked a 3-0 run with a pair of goals before Messantonio and Marquino answered with back-to-back goals within a two-minute span to make it a 17-12 game with 14:12 left.

Lycoming then broke the game open by scoring six straight goals, including two each by Wingerden and Mack, to take a comfortable 23-12 lead with eight minutes remaining.

The Warriors' 25 goals is the most-ever allowed by Scranton and the most since Middlebury scored 24 goals against the Royals on March 28, 2002, in a game played in Florida.

Messantonio finished with 60 goals and five assists for 65 total points to lead the Royals in scoring for the second straight year. Rocklein was second in scoring with 33 goals and 17 assists for 50 total points, while Marquino contributed 22 goals and 18 assists for 40 total points to place third.
