No. 1 C.W. Post Wraps up ECC Crown, Finishes 15-0
PHILADELPHIA (May 1, 2007) - Sophomore Jaclyn Napoli eclipsed the 40-goal barrier for the season with a five-goal, two-assist performance Tuesday afternoon, and the top-ranked C.W. Post women's lacrosse team wrapped up its second undefeated regular season in school history, and second straight East Coast Conference title, with a 16-3 victory at No. 10 Philadelphia.
The visiting Pioneers finish the regular season at 15-0, with a 5-0 mark in ECC play. This marks the first time since 2004 (14-0) that head coach Karen MacCrate Henning's squad has gone undefeated in regular season play. Last season, C.W. Post won the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now ECC) title.
C.W. Post jumped out to a 6-1 halftime lead after scoring the first six goals of the game. Napoli completed her hat trick exactly 13 minutes into play, with Katie Hogan (2 g, 1 a), Staci Passafiume and Kim Williams also scoring in the opening 30-minute half. Senior Shannon Fabian (2 g, 2 a) and junior Elaine Williams assisted on two goals apiece in the first half for the Pioneers.
Philadelphia (9-4, 2-3 ECC) scored a goal 1:37 into the second half to pull within a 6-2 count, before C.W. Post ripped off 10 straight goals to put the game out of reach. Fabian, Hogan and Napoli (her 40th goal) all scored within 1:05 of each other, before Fabian added her second goal of the day with 22:44 remaining to push the lead to 10-6. Senior Colleen Agostinacchio netted her lone goal of the day with under 20 minutes remaining, before Napoli, freshman Brianne Jackolski, sophomore Samantha Lyons, senior Ashlyn Giulianelli and freshman Caitlin Heraghty rounded out the visitors' scoring.
C.W. Post's defensive effort was impressive, holding Philadelphia to single-digit goals for the first time this season. The Pioneers forced 15 of the Rams' 17 turnovers on the day, and allowed just 15 shots on the afternoon (five in the first half). Junior goalkeeper Lauren Scipione made four saves and allowed two goals in just over 53 minutes of play, while sophomore Ann Denning picked up one save on the afternoon.
MacCrate Henning's team will now wait until Sunday night (May 6) between 9 and 10 p.m., when CSTV will televise the NCAA Division II Championships Selection Show. The Pioneers are the only remaining undefeated team in Division II, and a selection to this year's Championships would be a record-tying sixth such occurrence. The four-team Championships will take place May 12-13, at Spartan Field in Salem, Va.
